The Borlaug Institute’s programs provide researchers, policymakers and university faculty from developing countries the ability to strengthen sustainable agricultural practices through scientific training and collaborative research opportunities. The Borlaug Institute aims to be the leading international agriculture program among U.S. universities, measured by the quality of its international teaching, science and extension programs.
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug’s contributions to combating world hunger include technical innovation, training of agricultural scientists and workers, and intellectual leadership. He has influenced public policy, given advice to leaders, and inspired countless individuals. His counsel is wise and forceful, his will tenacious, and his actions quick, energetic, and bold. Although none who walk behind him can completely fill his shoes, he has inspired followers in many nations. Through the sum of their efforts, these new leaders can fulfill his vision.
Building on Dr. Borlaug’s work, the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M employs agricultural science to feed the world’s hungry, and to support equity, economic growth, quality of life, and mutual respect among peoples. Involvement and leadership in international agriculture are increasingly vital as interdependence grows among the world’s people. Their goal is to encourage and enable students, faculty, citizens and institutions to respond to opportunities in international agriculture.
To this end, the Borlaug Institute:
Mission: They are a university-based organization under the Texas A&M University System, dedicated to continue Dr. Borlaug’s legacy by helping to elevate small-holder farmers out of poverty and hunger through agriculture science.
Originally founded in 1984 as the Office of International Progams, the Borlaug Institute was renamed in 2006 and continues to carry on and expand the legacy of its namesake- the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug- by playing a key role in fighting world hunger.
The Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University designs and implements science based agricultural development and training programs that guide the phases of agricultural industry from production to consumption in order to fight hunger and poverty among small holder agricultural communities of the developing world.
