Since its foundation in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, The Donkey Sanctuary has grown from a charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse to an international animal welfare organisation transforming the lives of millions of donkeys and mules worldwide. Today, we have 12 sanctuaries around the UK and Europe, and we have delivered veterinary, welfare and educational programmes in almost 40 countries around the world, reaching donkeys and mules most in need. Our aim is to help many more of the tens of millions of donkeys and mules worldwide through field projects, research, and advocacy, promoting lasting collaborations with communities, partner NGOs, governments, media and the public.
In an exciting time of growth, and following the development of The Donkey Sanctuary’s ambitious new strategy (2023 – 2027), we are looking to appoint a new Executive Director of Resources.
Reporting directly to the CEO, Marianne Steele, and working as part of a small senior management team, the new Executive Director of Resources will provide strategic leadership across all Donkey Sanctuary resources activities. They will have direct responsibility for the Director of Finance, Director of Income Generation, Director of Information Systems and Data, Head of Estates, and Head of Facilities. The new Executive Director will lead this Resources directorate to deliver a range of activities that are aligned to the delivery of The Donkey Sanctuary strategy and business plan.
This role cuts across all areas of The Donkey Sanctuary’s UK and international operations; strong candidates will have significant experience of coordinating, streamlining, and delivering high-performance services across a complex organisation. They will have a track record of engaging and inspiring others in ‘big picture’ thinking, yet also be happy to work in the detail. Experience applying commercial and risk management skills in a charitable organisation would be ideal. The Donkey Sanctuary is looking for someone data-driven and analytical, with strong people skills and an ability to drive a collective sense of purpose.
The successful candidate will have the ability to build and sustain professional working relationships with a wide range of people both inside and outside the organisation and we would expect candidates to have compassion, empathy and respect for donkeys and mules, and for those who work with them.
