Work Location
This internship is based in Geneva on a full-time basis, and the internship modality is in-person or remote. The specific modalities may be discussed and mutually agreed upon by the managers and the selected candidate(s).

Expected duration
Full-time (40 hours per week) for 3-6 months, with desired start date of February 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Financial Investigation Team (FIT) of the Collection, Analysis and Sharing Section (CASS) within the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), Geneva, Switzerland. The intern will work under the supervision of a Financial Investigator or Analyst within FIT.

Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with the Financial Investigators, Legal Officers, Investigators and Analysts in CASS. FIT focuses on the financial dimensions of serious international crimes (war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide) in Myanmar, including conducting investigations into aiding and abetting and other forms of accessory liability.

The duties of interns may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting open and closed source research on factual situations under FIT’s investigations and preparing analyses on issues relating to international and national criminal law, international human rights law and/or public international law;
  • Conducting research on factual and policy issues;
  • Contributing to the preparation of analytical products, briefing papers, reports and/or public information materials;
  • Assisting in the compilation and review of information, documentation and evidence;
  • Proof-reading;
  • Editing documents;
  • Drafting meeting records.

Interns may be engaging with and be exposed to materials with violent imagery and distressing subject matters.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme maximum one year before the date of their application.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, they are required to have undertaken studies in law, international relations, political science or related areas. Please elaborate on the courses you have taken.

Academic or prior experience in financial, sanctions, legal research or analysis in the field of international crimes or serious human rights violations or related areas is desirable. Please provide examples if you have such experience.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this Internship, fluency in English is required.
