MSH is a nonprofit international health organization with nearly 2,500 people from over 74 nationalities working in over 40 countries. Our mission: Saving lives and improving the health of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people by closing the gap between knowledge and action in public health. Together with our partners, we are helping managers and leaders in developing countries to create stronger management systems that improve health services for the greatest health impact.
While high percentages of women across low-income countries attend at least one antenatal care (ANC) visit, many do not attend the recommended number of visits during their pregnancy. To better respond to women’s needs and expectations and improve coverage of ANC, there is growing recognition that alternative models of care are needed. Group models that promote self-care and social support, first developed in the US, are emerging as a promising alternative, if adapted to women’s needs and the local context. MSH is testing this model in several countries to identify how it may be adapted for low-income settings.
