Position Description
The Assistant Director of Student Affairs is responsible for advising students in the undergraduate program (UG), teaching a maximum of two first year seminar courses each semester (and summer as needed), coordinating a series of Student Success Seminars targeting at-risk students, working with the UNV course development, student sports programs, and administering student conduct cases and policy. The Assistant Director is an important collaborator in the facilitation of the vision of the Director and University within the department.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an academic advisor for undergraduate students.
- Teach a maximum of two sections of first year seminar courses each semester.
- Oversee curriculum planning for the UNV 100 and other first year seminar courses.
- Assist in the creation and facilitation of departmental assessment of programs, fiscal spending, and activities.
- Maintain accurate student records for advising, grading and attendance, and submitting grade reports within the established deadlines.
- Monitoring campus climate for critical issues such as racism, harassment, etc. which may negatively affect students’ ability to achieve their educational objectives.
- Assisting in the maintenance of institutional academic integrity by responding to instances of academic dishonestly in the classroom.
- Administer student discipline for the campus including the development of polices, investigating cases, holding hearings, and issuing statistical reports.
- Conduct Student Affairs staff performance reviews.
- Assist in the development and coordination of Student Success Seminars targeting at-risk students to improve their academic performance.
- Create and promote an environment which supports student growth and development.
- Assist the Director of Student Affairs in developing policies, updating the Student Handbook, and developing strategic plans and reports.
- Demonstrate a professional attitude, philosophy, and commitment which promotes student growth and learning.
- Assist in the supervision of Student Development Specialists and other Student Affairs staff to ensure effective service delivery.
- Assist with student activities, graduation and event planning, and new student orientation.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned by the Director of Student Affairs.
- Serve as Acting Director in the absence of the Director.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a closely related field.
- 3 - 6 years of experience working in a college or university environment.
- Understanding of college student development theory.
- Experience working in an Islamic country and/or a developing nation.
- Teaching experience.
- Work experience with international and ESL students.
- Experience in a diverse, multi-cultural working environment.
Skills
- Knowledge of policies and procedures of an academic environment.
- Knowledge of theories and best practices of student development.
- Excellent command of the English language.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of student conduct and discipline.
- Direct experience working within an American system of higher education.
- Ability and knowledge in maintaining a high degree of professionalism.
- Ability to operate a personal computer including Microsoft Office programs.
