Background information The United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) is the leading United Nations Institute devoted to research, training and knowledge management in partnership with governments, the United Nations System, civil society and academia to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Its vision is to be a leader in strategic and innovative actions that make a difference in women’s lives.
UN-INSTRAW is governed by an Executive Board (composed of 10 Member States) and has a small core staff dedicated to the servicing and coordination of UN-INSTRAW programmes and projects. The Institute reports to ECOSOC and the General Assembly. It works in close collaboration with other UN entities through mechanisms such as the Inter-agency Network on Women and Gender Equality and agreements for collaborative partnerships. UN-INSTRAW’s headquarters are located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Other UN entities with national representation at the duty station are: UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, FAO, WFP, UNAIDS, and World Bank.
Gender, Migration, Remittances and Development programme This programme aims to highlight the increasingly influential role that women migrants play in the maintenance of their households and the development of their families and communities both in countries of origin and destination. Hence, UN-INSTRAW promotes the inclusion of a gender perspective in research, analysis and policy-making in relation to migration and remittances. Although there is growing interest in the potential contribution of remittances to poverty-reduction and community development, reflected in the formulation of policies and programmes to maximize their potential, there is a significant gap in understanding and action related to the gender dimensions of remittances. Thus, UN-INSTRAW considers that a critical review of research, policies, and programmes on remittances from a gender perspective is essential to ensuring their effective contribution to development. UN-INSTRAW has pioneered research in this area through a series of case studies analyzing the gender dimensions of the sending, use and impact of remittances. More specifically these case studies will reveal: (i) the contribution of women migrants to the development of their countries and their communities of origin and the relevance of this contribution to poverty eradication and the achievement of the MDGs; (ii) how women’s migration is affecting gender roles, power relations and decision-making processes in households and communities of origin; and (iii) policies and programmes aimed at increasing the development potential of remittances and include gender perspectives and women’s contribution, needs and priorities. At present, the series includes case studies conducted in the following countries: Albania, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Lesotho, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, and countries in Southern Africa.
