Description

Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located within the Institutional Memory Section of the UN Geneva Library & Archives, Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent will report to the Chief, Institutional Memory Section.

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Institutional Memory Section and within delegated authority, the Associate Librarian will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides reference services.
  • Reviews a variety of sources to identify appropriate materials that meet the information needs of the Organization and its information clientele.
  • Provides complete descriptions to be added to the collection.
  • Organizes, classifies and describes print and electronic information resources.
  • Uses knowledge of institutional information needs to evaluate, recommend and acquire printed and electronic materials to be added to the Library Network collections.
  • Supports digital preservation and other digital related activities.
  • Participates in the creation of electronic and other reference tools, and the compilation of finding aids and bibliographies.
  • Participates in the Library & Archives social media campaign.
  • Participates in providing archives and library related training.
  • Monitors the performance of vendors and exchange partners and recommends changes where necessary.
  • Supports the development of knowledge management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s or degree or equivalent degree) in library science, archives management, records / information management or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree only is required for candidates who have passed a United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in archives management, library work, records/information information management, knowledge management or related area is required. (No experience for candidates who have passed a United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination is needed)

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English or French is required; knowledge of the other is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

  • This position is temporarily available for six months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

  • Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

  • This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

  • Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.
