SDA Design Consultants , part of the NIRAS group, is a multi-disciplinary civil and structural engineering consultancy based in Kegworth, Derbyshire. The Company offers civil and structural engineering design services to a range of clients, project types and values. Due to increasing project commissions and appointments, we are seeking to appoint a full-time Civil Engineer to support the project delivery team.

The ideal candidate would be chartered, or almost chartered, and have a minimum of 5 years’ recent, relevant UK experience gained in a consultancy environment in a similar Civil Engineer role.

About the job

  • Collaborating with the project delivery team to create and develop designs, including for foul and surface water drainage; highways; roadways; and car parking
  • Providing high quality concept, preliminary, and detailed technical designs for SuDS components, for adoptable as well as private drainage schemes
  • Carrying out a range of drainage calculations, including QBar, attenuation storage, soakaway sizing, foul loads, pipeline capacities and pipe network analysis for a range of drainage applications
  • Preparing Developer Enquiries, Environment Agency product requests and LLFA information requests, relating to drainage designs, flood risk assessments and drainage strategies
  • Preparing S104, S106 and S185 application forms and associated packages for submission to the Drainage Authority and Planning Authority
  • Report writing, e.g. Flood Risk Assessments, Drainage Strategies, Technical Notes in response to Planning Authority queries
  • Calculation of traffic profiles in order to determine pavement/road build-up designs.
  • Preparing S278, S38 application forms and associated packages for submission to the Highway Authority and Planning Authority
  • Using Microdrainage (Windes) to create, analyse, simulate and size the network drainage and SuDS components, as well as understand and interpret the analysis results
  • Using Civil 3D to carry out a range of design assignments such as groundworks platforms, highways alignments and profiles, cut/fill exercises and external works layouts


About you

  • Expertise in a range of relevant software packages including but not limited to Micro Drainage (WinDes), Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Microsoft suite of programs
  • Recent, relevant experience of detailed design for a variety of drainage works including but not limited to residential schemes, commercial schemes, car parks, and industrial schemes
  • Knowledge and application of design guides including but not limited to Sewers for Adoption, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and BS 7533 for permeable pavement designs, BRE Digest 365, the Building Regulations Part H, and CIRIA C753 (SuDS Manual)
  • An understanding of Section 104, 106 and 185 of the Water Industry Act 1991 agreements and submission criteria for drainage schemes
  • An understanding of Section 278 and 38 of the Highways Act 1980 agreements and submission criteria for roadway and access schemes
  • Ability to interpret Ground Investigations, CCTV surveys, Topographical surveys, and Services surveys
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
