Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com), a national retained nonprofit executive search firm, has been engaged to conduct the search for a Chief Impact Officer for our client, Worldreader, an international organization changing literacy by providing access to educational services and technology across the world.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

Worldreader is a nonprofit on a mission to bring digital books to every child and her family, so that they can improve their lives. Every month over half a million people use Worldreader’s library of 40,000 e-books to read in 40 languages. Our readers come from countries such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, India and Philippines. We are a high performing and enthusiastic team whose members have grown corporations from million-dollar levels to billion-dollar levels, cycled across the United States and swum across the Straits of Gibraltar to raise $100,000 for Worldreader.

THE JOB:

This is a new position in the Executive Team to lead an energetic and motivated team to achieve our mission and impact. The Chief of Impact plays a key leadership role at Worldreader. S/he will report to the CEO and manages a team of Program Directors and support staff. The Chief of Impact will be a key advisor to the CEO and other leadership. Leveraging her/his experience in international development, the Chief of Impact will lead the design and implementation of Worldreader’s Programs, driving deep and lasting impact. S/he will work within the Impact Team and across Worldreader departments to build consensus on the organization’s overall strategy, support organizational growth, and staff professional development. This position is for direct-hire and will be located in San Francisco, CA.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 12-15+ years of experience in international development, educational, or technology organizations, including at least 10 years of previous experience working at the executive level at a mix of both for profit and non-profit organizations.
  • Extensive experience designing, developing, and implementing programs funded by bilateral and multilateral funders, particularly USAID and DFID
  • Extensive experience managing large teams (20+ members) across diverse geographies and building a strong culture of professional development and mentorship.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of innovation, technology, and strong business acumen are essential characteristics of the right candidate.
  • Master’s Degree degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Deep understanding of nonprofit finances and compliance issues.
  • Knowledge of basic monitoring and evaluation principles. Experience designing, implementing and/or overseeing M&E frameworks is highly desirable.
  • Extensive cross-cultural experience, including time spent living in the Global South and/or teaching in low-resource environments.
  • Experience working in education technology in the developing world is an asset.
  • Experience working with a range of stakeholders, from local grassroots partners to large multinational NGOs, and multi- and bilateral funding agencies.
  • Structured and organized, but a creative thinker.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating an inclusive workplace.
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically up to 50%.
