Job Description

TITLE: Chief Policy Officer

LOCATION: Washington, D.C.

REPORTS TO: President

Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is dedicated to ending the worldwide burden of the three biggest infectious diseases. We work with U.S. policymakers, the private sector, foundations, the media, and global health partners to build U.S. support for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and for other investments in tackling these diseases and advancing global health.

The Chief Policy Officer will play a leadership role in developing and advancing Friends’ policy, advocacy and communications goals. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in health policy and expertise in communicating and advocating on global health issues. A strong background in tuberculosis, malaria and/or global health policy and programming is required. He/she will work in partnership with the President, and as part of the whole Friends team, to set the organization’s advocacy strategies, develop policy positions and papers, analyze legislative developments and financing issues, and represent the organization on Capitol Hill, with the Administration, and in a wide variety of fora.

Duties

  • Provide leadership on key strategic and cross cutting issues and projects
  • Analyze and communicate about complex policy and financing issues
  • Maintain strong working relationships, on behalf of the organization, with policy makers, Congressional and Administration staff, policy experts and the global health community
  • Develop issue briefs, opinion pieces, articles, press statements, grant proposals, briefing materials, budgets, and grant agreements
  • Identify and work with the President to maintain and grow the organization’s fundraising efforts
  • Collaborate closely with all Friends staff on policy and communications priorities
  • Review and edit written communications by team members
  • Intermittent domestic and/or international travel

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of malaria, tuberculosis, and/or global health policy issues
  • Expertise in US policy making
  • Creativity and agility in analyzing challenges and identifying strategic approaches
  • Strong working relationships and credibility with a range of actors in global health policy
  • Excellent communications and analytic skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the Friends team and with our allies
  • Strong project management skills; able to balance and manage multiple tasks and priorities

Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree in Public Policy, Public Health or a related field
  • Experience advocating effectively with decision makers at the national level
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in global health or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience managing others and leading a team
  • Previous global health, foreign policy, executive branch, Capitol Hill and/or nonprofit experience

Compensation

  • Compensation is competitive and based on salary experience.
