UNDP is the UN development agency that is charged with helping countries achieve the simultaneous eradication of extreme poverty, and significant reduction of inequalities and exclusion using a sustainable human development approach. To this end, UNDP partners with people at all levels of society to help build resilient nations that can withstand crises, drive, and sustain the kind of growth that improves the quality of life for everyone.
In Eritrea, UNDP has been an important sustainable development partner for more than 25 years.
The Country Office activities started with a Liaison Office in March 1992. After a successful UN-supervised referendum in 1993, the Liaison Office was upgraded into a fully-fledged Country Office in January 1994, since then UNDP has worked closely with the Government of Eritrea as a trusted partner.
UNDP Eritrea enjoys a strong partnership with the government and is keen to strengthen its position as a partner of choice, UNDP Eritrea promotes a more inclusive economy and society benefiting from shared sustainable and human-centered development, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerabilities by localizing global knowledge and innovation for sustainable development, particularly in the areas of Strategic Governance and Inclusive and Sustainable Development, Gender Equality, and women’s empowerment.
Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework Between the Government of the State of Eritrea and the United Nations 2022 – 2026 (developed in close partnership with the Government of the State of Eritrea), the UNDP Country Office will seek to enhance the delivery as one, further strengthening the position and the brand of the UNDP as a driver of change in the Sustainable Development Agenda.
