Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting and Reporting

  • UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities and is the focal point for urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.
  • UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.
  • The position is located in the Communications and Media Section of the External Relations and Partnerships Branch, within the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI) of UN-Habitat in Nairobi.
  • ERSKI is responsible for strategic planning, programmatic direction, and operationalization of UN-Habitat’s role for the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and coordination of Emergency Programmes.
  • The Communications and Media Section promotes UN-Habitat as a centre of excellence, develops content for communication on urban development and SDG-related trends, manages corporate branding, websites, exhibitions, and coordinates corporate/project communications/events.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Chief of Communication in reviewing, recording, distributing, and processing correspondence and documents, including emails and hard copies; follow up on pending actions.
  • Assist in monitoring schedules related to the Chief of Communication’s work plan and calendar; verify receipt, accuracy, and completion of documents and approvals.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to meetings, boards, committees, and conferences; assist in planning and organization.
  • Draft responses to routine correspondence and other communications as requested.
  • Take minutes of meetings, boards, or committees as assigned.
  • Support preparation of presentations, briefing notes, and talking points for the Chief of Communication; produce copies of documents or materials as requested.
  • Assist in preparation of social media post drafts and related materials in collaboration with the social media and production team.
  • Contribute to content and editorial work by clarifying and verifying information as requested.
  • Provide support to the team and section coordinator in administrative tasks, coordination of workflows, and production of materials aligned with the editorial calendar.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor or team.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
    • Graduated with Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or equivalent
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated keen interest in UN work and commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Preferred areas of study: languages, journalism, marketing, communications; international relations or related fields also considered.
  • Strong drafting, writing, and editing skills in English; proficiency in other UN languages preferred.
  • Organizational and time management skills are desirable.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment is desirable.
  • Familiarity with social media and digital communication tools is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN; costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns not citizens or permanent residents may need appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
