Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting

  • UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities and is the focal point for urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.
  • Works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.
  • Promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force to reduce inequality, discrimination, and poverty.
  • The Urban Basic Services Section focuses on providing essential services to urban residents, especially vulnerable groups such as children, women, the elderly, indigenous groups, people with disabilities, and the urban poor.

UN-Habitat’s Work on Urban Mobility and Road Safety

  • The Urban Mobility team works to achieve sustainable mobility in rapidly urbanizing cities, addressing car-based urban development and rising two- and three-wheeler fleets.
  • Focus areas include Active Mobility, Road Safety, E-Mobility, Public Transport, and Transit-Oriented Development.
  • Supports capacity building for local and national authorities to promote sustainable urban mobility and contributes to SDGs and the New Urban Agenda.
  • Road safety is a key focus: the team collaborates with governments, partners, and communities to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries among vulnerable road users.
  • Implements evidence-based policy advice, capacity building, and demonstration projects for safe infrastructure and inclusive street design.
  • Leads initiatives like the Global Alliance of Cities for Road Safety (ACRoS), facilitating knowledge sharing, innovation, and scaling up road safety solutions globally.
  • Supports the EU Global Gateway initiative through projects like the Port of Tanzania – Trade and Transport Improvement Project, focusing on trade facilitation, port performance, and electric mobility.

Responsibilities of the Intern

  • Support the ACRoS programme, including drafting and implementing a Communication Strategy.
  • Assist with ongoing communication with partners, current city members, and new membership requests.
  • Update and maintain the ACRoS website (WordPress) with news, events, and resources.
  • Draft and edit stories, articles, and web features highlighting ACRoS activities and road safety initiatives.
  • Provide technical support, including developing capacity-building materials, planning workshops, managing memberships, and conducting research on road safety data and policies.
  • Develop surveys and questionnaires for training needs, impact assessment, and feedback.
  • Create visual content such as infographics, maps, and tables for promotion and dissemination.
  • Support literature reviews, knowledge pieces, briefs, and report development.
  • Assist in developing interactive learning experiences on road safety.
  • Support the Port of Dar es Salaam Trade and Transport Improvement Project, including drafting a Communication Strategy.
  • Perform any other tasks related to the team’s portfolio.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or higher)
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
    • Completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated interest in the United Nations and commitment to its ideals.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Preferred fields of study: Urban Planning/Design, Architecture, Computer Science/IT, Data Science, Environmental Science, Innovation Management, Urban Geography, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability in:
    • Knowledge of road safety policies, Safe System Approach, and the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety
    • Use of media and communication software (Adobe Illustrator, Canva, Mailchimp, WordPress) and understanding digital content workflows
    • Strong writing and editing skills for drafting engaging stories and articles
    • Collaborative work with attention to detail
    • Developing creative graphic materials (desirable)
  • Experience in designing communication strategies and campaigns, producing public information materials, and knowledge management is desirable.
  • Professional work experience is not required for UN internships, but relevant fields of study are necessary.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated; costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may need appropriate visas and work authorization.
