We encourage all qualified persons to apply, particularly Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized people, and people with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations, and others who share our values and contribute to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace.

We are looking for a Communications Advisor. The incumbent will work with the Senior Manager, Communications, Saskatchewan, and will support the development and execution of communications strategy in support of Canadian Red Cross strategic and operational goals.

In this role, you will be:

  • Supporting, coordinating, and implementing provincial communications plans in support of domestic operations.

  • Supporting the production of provincial communications products and publications (e.g., brochures, guides, presentations, videos, speeches).

  • Writing and editing provincial communications materials as required, including blog and impact stories for donors and/or the public.

  • Providing media relations support in response to media inquiries and conducting media outreach, as needed.

  • Conducting media training for Red Cross team members and supporting spokespeople.

  • Acting as a spokesperson, as required.

  • Covering the on-call Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut media lines and social media feeds, when required.

  • Providing social media support for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut’s provincial digital media channels, which may include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and NextDoor.

  • Providing support for emergency response operations on-site or remotely for crisis management, content gathering, and media relations, as required.

What we are looking for:

  • A university degree in communications, journalism or public relations, with three-to five-years of job-related experience or the equivalent work experience and education.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills in English. French is an asset.

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to work with employees and volunteers at all levels within the organization and across the country.

  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Comprehensive understanding of the needs and workings of TV, print, on-line and radio media in national, regional and local levels.

  • Knowledge of current and emerging social media channels and the relevance of digital/social channels to media and stakeholder relations.

  • Knowledge of Canadian Press style.

  • Layout and page design skills are viewed as assets.

Working conditions:

  • Valid driver’s license is required.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Office work is performed in a typical office environment and can be a combination of work from home and within the Canadian Red Cross office(s).

  • Ability to work non-traditional and longer hours often on short notice, especially during times of emergency response.

  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is mandatory for this position and operation (the CRC will however adhere to its duty to accommodate those who are unable to be fully vaccinated for a reason related to a human right protected ground).

NOTE: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

About the Organization

The Canadian Red Cross helps people affected by emergencies and disasters—situations ranging from a housefire to a flood that disrupts an entire region of the country. Following a disaster, the Red Cross works with governments and other humanitarian organizations to provide for people's basic needs—food, clothing, shelter, first aid, emotional support and family reunification. The specific services offered are based on the community's needs and the role that their Red Cross has in the local disaster response plan. The Canadian Red Cross works overseas in cooperation with other members of the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement: 185 National Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross. With the support of the Canadian public and the Canadian International Development Agency, we work in situations of war and natural disaster to bring urgently needed relief items, reunite families and help rebuild communities. The Canadian Red Cross supports and manages development and rehabilitation programs, ranging from primary health care to water sanitation. Each year, the Canadian Red Cross sends about 100 professional relief workers on overseas missions.
