Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is designed to be hybrid, remote, or in-person at UN Headquarters in New York for a period of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension to six (6) months. The envisioned start date is as soon as possible.

This internship can be performed either:

  • Full-time (35 hours per week)
  • Part-time (20 hours per week)

The candidate may be requested to work remotely for part or the entirety of the internship, depending on visa issuance, international travel constraints, and access to UN premises.

This internship is within the Climate, Peace and Security Unit under the Policy and Mediation Division (PMD) of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The incumbent will report to the relevant supervisor.

As part of the Climate, Peace and Security Unit, the intern will provide creative multimedia content and communications support.

Note:
The internship is UNPAID, and travel costs, travel arrangements (including visas), and living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will work under the supervision of the Political Affairs Officer in PMD’s Climate, Peace and Security Unit and will be responsible for one or more of the following duties:

Social Media:
  • Prepare communication and campaigns for various social media channels to raise awareness on the climate, peace, and security agenda.
  • Assist in drafting or editing materials to promote activities undertaken by Climate, Peace, and Security Advisors and the Climate Security Mechanism.
  • Assist in graphic design for social media and other digital platforms.
  • Assist in editorial scheduling of social media assets and social media analytics.
Web:
  • Assist in the creation of new web content.
  • Translate or edit content.
  • Assist in drafting technical and editorial documentation.
  • Upload content on the website or other content management tools (e.g., Trello).
  • Conduct summary/analytical tasks to assess audience and communications impact.
  • Support web mastering, editing, and graphic design.
  • Assist in maintaining and improving the web ecosystem.
Multimedia:
  • Support the production of general multimedia content, including videos for various audiences.
  • Assist in online podcast interview postproduction.
  • Help in photo research and sourcing for publications and brochures.
  • Assist in the creation of newsletters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Learning Opportunities for the Intern
  • Gain a general understanding of the work and mission of DPPA and the evolving climate, peace, and security agenda.
  • Hands-on experience with the preparation and implementation of multimedia materials for an international organization, including editorial and outreach processes.
  • Insight into modern corporate communications issues.
Qualifications / Special Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
(b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Additional requirements:

  1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, but a field of study closely related to the type of internship is required.
  2. Applicants must be:
    • A student in the final year of a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. program.
    • OR have completed a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. program.
  3. Candidates must provide proof of enrollment or completion (an official certificate may be required later).
Languages
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Visa and Work Authorization Requirements

For internships in the United States:

  • Interns who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must obtain a G-4 visa.
  • If already in the U.S. on another visa type, interns must ensure they have a valid visa and employment authorization.

For internships outside the U.S.:

  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country must obtain a valid visa and work permit.
  • The UN must ensure that all applicants are authorized to work in the country where the internship will be undertaken.
  • Proof of visa and/or work authorization is required before starting the internship.
Internship Restrictions
  • Applicants who have already completed six (6) months of internship in any UN Common System cannot be engaged again as an intern.
  • Applicants related to active UN staff (children, siblings, sons/daughters-in-law, stepchildren, or step/half-siblings) cannot be engaged as an intern.
