Background

DPKO-CITS is charged with the operational and managerial responsibility for all videoconferencing undertaken by the Department of Peace-Keeping Operations and its related organs globally. There has been a dramatic increase in the demand for such services over the last few years combined with rapid technological developments, which requires an increase in capacity to support this service. UNOPS has been requested by DPKO-CITS to assist in implementing the activity.

The incumbent is responsible for servicing and testing equipment for the DPKO Video Conferencing facility at UNLB. The incumbent will provide support for all video conferencing activities originating or transiting UNLB; which will include the set up of all conferences and the operation of the equipment during conferences. The incumbent will assist also with the distribution and return of IT equipment, and assist in the operation and maintenance of the Wide Area Network infrastructure that supports videoconferencing.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Technician-Video Conferencing Technician is responsible for providing video conferencing support to the United Nations Logistics Base by:

? Testing equipment and setting-up the necessary Wide Area Network (WAN) links before conferences. Operating the relevant room equipment during the conferences. The incumbent must over-see the entire conference for some time to ensure that all equipment is functioning properly. ? Ensuring that the equipment necessary for each video conference is tested and working properly. This will require working knowledge and experience on: ? Picturetel, PolyCom, Tanberg, Sony and Accord videoconferencing endpoints, gateways, and multipoint control unit products; ? Various short-haul and long-haul, high-speed data carrier equipment (eg. High Speed Line Driver (copper/fiber) equipment); ? Inverse multiplexing equipment, eg., Adtran ISU 512; ? Cisco IGX WAN Switches and Routers; ? LAN/ WAN protocols and technologies; and ? an overall understanding of satellite communication technologies. ? Assist with the distribution and return of CIT equipment for DPKO and with Inventory Management functions, such as receipt, inspection, issue, return-to-stock, write-off, shipments and stock checks. Update the Inventory Management System (IMS), such as receipt, issue, return-to-stock, write-off, shipments, and data cleansing. ? Assist with the maintenance and operation of the WAN in terms of monitoring, tracking, and logging events to provide input for the network engineers. ? Perform other duties as required

Academic Qualifications/Experience/Language

The incumbent must have the following experience/qualities:

? Completion of secondary school education or equivalent technical school. ? Good technical knowledge of Video Conferencing and associated equipment. ? Basic knowledge of satellite communications and Wide Area Networking. ? 1-2 years experience operating Video Conferencing equipment, ? Fluent in English ? Self-reliant, able to work independently or as part of a team ? Able to work in a multi cultural environment ? Physically fit and in good health
