Job Description

World Learning seeks an ambitious HR Manager, Compensation and Benefits to join our team. As a Manager, Compensation and Benefits, s/he/they will be responsible for overseeing, managing and administering our employees’ rewards, perks and benefits. This role will be extremely important as s/he/they will be developing programs to improve performance, engagement and satisfaction of our employees. S/he/they will oversee the benefits administration, compensation practice, HRIS/HRMS and systems-to-systems interfaces that the organization employs. S/he/they will foster and maintain positive relationships with managers and staff at all levels of the organization to ensure effective administration, definition, and delivery of all HR-related policies and programs and systems. This position requires frequent work with confidential information including employee information, compensation, and benefits. This position researches, recommends and implements new HR department technologies and plans as well as runs HR data reports as needed and requested. This position recommends process/service improvements, innovative solutions, policy changes and or major variations from established policy. The Manager, Compensation and Benefits has a strong systems orientation, and can work effectively with peers to conduct strategic planning and initiatives. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

This position is based in Brattleboro, VT or Washington, D.C.


  • Oversee benefit and HRIS budget creation and monitoring;
  • Responsible for new Human Resources vendor agreements, negotiations and on-going oversight;
  • Oversight of the Personal Notification process, administration and system under guidance from Director of HR, Global Programs and Systems;
  • Partner closely with Senior Management, Finance and Legal to ensure the company’s benefits plans, programs, and initiatives are competitive, affordable, deliverable, and consistent with the company’s employment proposition;
  • Manage the Affirmative Action Plan processing. Including all reporting, plan creation, implementation and review;
  • Manage the team that is responsible for audits and documentation; design and implement processes and procedures to maintain data integrity, troubleshoot and recommend solutions;
  • Oversee and ensure adequate training at all levels of the HR and occasionally IT department on HRIS report writing for recurring and specialized reporting requirements;
  • Establish and maintain HRIS, Benefits, and Compensation documentation, plan details, standard operating procedures, and comprehensive reports library;
  • Manage the participation and data gathering for salary survey participation, governmental reporting, benefit non-discrimination testing, census date, and audits;
  • Main contact between the organization and vendors for benefits, compensation, and systems;
  • Maintain awareness of current trends in Compensation, Benefits and HRIS by participating in meetings/conferences and subscribing to updates via multiple sources;
  • Develop and administer the organization’s compensation program to include the management of salary survey participation and analysis of the organization’s salary structure to ensure that organizational compensation objectives are achieved;
  • Assist managers with compensation issues to ensure fair and equitable application of compensation policy; assist employees with pay-related issues;
  • Provide counseling to managers and employees in the interpretation and application of federal, state, and local employment laws and the organization’s HR policies;
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and discretion in the management of sensitive information;
  • Oversee the efficient and effective use of the HRIS system by HR/Finance core users in HR and Finance as well as managers and employees across the organization, specifically as it pertains to payroll, and employee/manager interfaces;
  • Identify and address training and development needs of direct reports;
  • Review and approve vacation/time off requests and coordinate vacation/time off schedules;
  • Assist in the development of a departmental plan for backup and succession of supervisory staff and key technical personnel;
  • Ensure optimum performance of group function. Determine and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities and maintain state-of-the-art practices;
  • Assist in the development and communication of departmental policies and procedures. Partner with others in Human Resources to develop and approve job descriptions for subordinate positions; ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to employees;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • B.A./B.S. degree
  • 5 – 7 years of relevant experience
  • Two to three years of experience working with market-driven base compensation programs
  • Experience in an equivalent job, filling recruitment and/or immigration functions.
  • Solid sense of benefits and compensation system having integrated view of workflow and information flow.
  • Advanced PC skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS/HRMS
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  • Strong systems and process management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage projects, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work with all levels within the organization and with a diverse employee population
  • Knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • International HR experience a plus.
  • Experience working in an educational environment desired.
