Job Description

Devex is assisting a leading German consulting organization working in international development cooperation in identifying qualified candidates for the position of Consultant for Natural Resources Management –Africa Department, to be based in Hamburg, Germany, with frequent travel to the Sub-Saharan Region

This position will focus on the Natural Resources Management area, specifically on protected area and national park management, biodiversity and sustainable forest management as well as institutional development and good governance in the forest sector

This will be full-time consultant position with opportunity and contract will be on a 2-year term with the option for permanent employment.

Key Responsibilities:

The consultant will be responsible for project management, acquisition and strategic business development in the technical field of Natural Resource Management. Based on a dynamic market development in the Sub-Saharan region, the consultant will be engaged in strategic business area development, networking and concept development, aside from project management functions.

  • Business development in the field of natural resource management with a strong focus on conservation/protected area management
  • Leading the acquisition process of new projects, including elaboration and coordination of technical and financial proposals;
  • Client and partner management, i.e. establishing and maintaining regular professional relationships and networks with donor agencies, beneficiaries, partner companies or institutions, subcontractors and sector experts;
  • Full responsibility for the management of ongoing projects and studies (backstopping), on-site and Hamburg-based;
  • Conducting technical short-term consultancy missions, including participation in feasibility and project preparatory studies;
  • Writing of reports, concepts and presentations as well as contributing to knowledge and quality management, including the organization’s publications;
  • Representation in conferences and seminars;
  • Supporting on-the-job-training of Young-Professionals

Job Requirements:

  • University Degree (MSc., Eng., or PhD) in Forestry / Environmental Sciences / Development Economics or related topics
  • At least 5 years of relevant working experience in the context of development cooperation and natural resources management preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • Familiarity with the German (GIZ, KfW) development institutions and a well-founded understanding of the strategies and programmes of relevant donor agencies (EU, WB) would be an asset;
  • Full proficiency in written and spoken French and English; working knowledge of German is desirable;
  • Strong writing, communication and presentation skills;
  • Advanced proficiency in standard MS Office applications;
  • Willingness to frequently travel to the countries in the Sub-Saharan region;
  • Ability to manage complex situations with a sense of pragmatism.
