Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the Agency’s activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and security.
The objective of the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) is to achieve and maintain a high level of safety of nuclear installations worldwide that are under design or construction or in operation. The Division does this by establishing standards of safety for the protection of health, including standards for nuclear power plants and other nuclear installations and facilities, and by providing for the application of these standards through, among other things, support for the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation programme, the rendering of safety review services, the promotion of education and training, the fostering of information exchange and the coordination of research and development. In addition, the Division helps ensure safety at nuclear installations by supporting international safety instruments such as the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Code of Conduct on the Safety of Research Reactors. NSNI comprises five Sections:
Main Purpose
As a member of the project management team and reporting directly to the Director of NSNI, the Coordinator will coordinate requests for contribution or information to streamline reporting in all relevant areas of divisional activities. This includes, but is not limited to, the nuclear safety report, the annual report, the omnibus resolutions and the nuclear safety strategy. The Coordinator assists also in facilitating the working relationship with the extra budgetary contributors to the work of NSNI that is vital for the development and implementation of the projects aimed enhancing nuclear safety globally. The Coordinator will interact with staff throughout the Department and other Departments and Offices of the IAEA, including the Director General’s Office for Coordination and the Office of Safety and Security Coordination, and act as a point of contact for the ongoing coordination and integration of Departmental and Divisional activities.
Role
The Coordinator is: (a) a contributor, developing and coordinating information for reporting in all relevant areas of NSNI activities such as the nuclear safety report, the annual report, the omnibus resolutions and the nuclear safety strategy; (b) a focal point, maintaining a general knowledge of the technical work and schedules of the Division; (c) a team member, identifying major issues requiring the attention of the Director to improve office effectiveness in completing assigned work, and coordinating with and remaining cognizant of key Division interfaces with internal and external groups; (e) a coordinator of activities related to the communication and outreach within the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety and (e) representing the Division on various task groups.
