Country Director Ethiopia (F/M)

Job Description

As per September 1, 2023, or upon agreement we are looking for a Country Director Ethiopia (F/M) - 100%, Ethiopian National, based in Addis Ababa.

In Ethiopia, Helvetas engages in development for more than 20 years, with a current thematic focus on Natural Resources Management and Climate Resilience, Support to Local Governance, Skills Development and Education, and Rural Infrastructure (notably rural access through trail improvement and trail bridges). Helvetas also engages in Preparedness and Response to Emergencies.

As a Country Director, you ensure that the country programme operates efficiently and effectively within the frame of the Helvetas global strategy and the Ethiopia country strategy, meeting its objectives. You are responsible that the Helvetas Ethiopia programme is implemented in partnership with the government, the civil society and the private sector. You ensure financial planning and oversight of the programme and projects. You build and strengthen the network and relationships with central and local governments, donors and non-governmental development partners. Active engagement in acquisitions endeavours to further develop a sound project portfolio and to guarantee a base of funding of Helvetas Ethiopia is an important part of your function as well. You - together with your team - contribute to regional and international progress of the organisation as a whole.

For this challenging role, you have an academic degree (MSC or equivalent) in Natural or Social Science, Economy or in a similar domain. You have at least 5 years’ experience in a senior management position in development cooperation, and at least 10 years’ experience in development cooperation overall including preferably some experiences in other countries outside Ethiopia. Sound knowledge and experience in project cycle and financial management, including outcome-based M&E systems, in strategic and budgeting processes, and a track record in networking and policy dialogue with government and external support agencies as well as proven successful acquisition of projects and mandates are required. You communicate in an appropriate, systemic manner and foster teamwork, cooperation and knowledge sharing. Besides, you are a strong networker and motivator, and your conceptual, intercultural, and visionary competencies are excellent. You are fluent in English including excellent writing skills, any other language being a plus.
