1. Organizational Context
a. Organizational Setting
The position is in the Brand and Design Database Section of the Global Databases Division, Infrastructure and Platforms Sector. This Section is responsible for the WIPO Global Brand Database and Global Design Database, which include millions of harmonized records from the collections of Madrid, Lisbon, The Hague and Paris 6ter emblems and from an expanding number of national collections contributed by IP Offices. These systems offer advanced Trademark and Industrial Designs search functions to the public. They are used by thousands of users daily and are essential components of WIPO Global IP Infrastructure on the internet.
b. Purpose Statement
WIPO Global Brand Database and Global Design Database are built and deployed on a common cloud-based platform, which also ensures the operation of various APIs, as well as the daily ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) and indexing of trademark and industrial design data from multiple data sources.
Currently 87 data sources are integrated into the Global Brand Database and 40 data sources are integrated into the Global Design Database. The goal of the position is to support the section activities related to the existing ETL processes and the integration of new data sources into these applications.
c. Reporting Lines
The incumbent reports to the Head of the Brand and Design Database Section.
d. Work Relations
The Data Engineer might interact with IP office technical teams on how to integrate their national trademark and design data collections into WIPO Global Databases.
Regular coordination with the internal Information and Communication Technology Department is required to align new developments with WIPO IT standards.
2. Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:
a. Provide technical support for all aspects related to ETL in the Global Brand Database and Global Design Database, in particular evolution of data source formats, evolution of data delivery methods, monitoring and correction of daily ingestion process and maintenance of the existing ETL system.
b. Participate in the integration of new data sources into the Global Brand Database and the Global Design Database, by developing new data ingestion pipelines in the existing ETL system and improving existing features, while ensuring that control and security mechanisms are established and programming standards are met.
c. Document system processes and user operating procedures related to ETL.
d. Specify and implement additional processes for further normalizing, enriching and improving the data, possibly involving machine learning techniques.
e. Coordinate with IP Office IT teams regarding data formats and evolution of data deliveries.
f. Develop and improve monitoring and observability capacities for the current cloud platform to ensure efficient, cost-effective operation and rapid daily maintenance of the data systems managed by the Section.
g. Provide advice and support to the Head of the Section on all ETL and data processing technical issues.
h. Perform other duties as required.

Annual salary:
Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the October 2025 rate of 88.7%
Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
