The Mitchell Group, Inc. (TMG) is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to support our research team by sourcing, retrieving, and processing datasets for analysis. This role focuses on collecting trade data from large scale public data sets, including developing application programming interfaces (APIs) processing data to deliver clean, well-structured datasets to the project team, and working with government stakeholders to integrate data into existing government platforms.
This position is ideal for an experienced data engineer with a background working with trade-related data sets and integrating data into government platforms. Previous experience facilitating client-facing actions is preferred. This position is remote but must be based in the United States.
Key Responsibilities:
· Retrieve and prepare/compile datasets for analysis from public and private online sources.
· Use application programming interfaces (APIs) to request and extract structured data (e.g., Census API and similar sources).
· Conduct basic data cleaning and formatting. Provide clean, well-organized raw datasets (folders of raw data files).
· Perform web scraping using Python or R.
· Document data sources, retrieval steps, and any technical considerations.
· Collaborate closely with government stakeholders to integrate data into government platforms
· Navigate complexity and design innovative solutions
· Collaborate closely with the research team to understand data requirements and timelines.
Required Qualifications:
· 10 years of experience in data engineering and API.
· Experience working with trade-related data sets.
· Proficiency in Python or R for data collection and scraping.
· Ability to use APIs to request and retrieve online data.
· Basic understanding of data structures, file formats, and data retrieval workflows.
· Familiarity with common Python/R libraries for scraping and API calls.
· Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow structured data workflows.
· U.S. citizen able to obtain a public trust clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with subject matter experts in high-stakes, deadline-driven environments
· Exceptional communication skills
· Previous experience facilitating U.S. government client-facing interactions in a discreet and professional manner.
