Post Title: Deputy Director of Development

Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Location: London office

Annual Salary: Highly competitive

Purpose of Role

The Deputy Director of Development, UK, leads IWPR’s fundraising efforts in the UK, under the supervision of the Chief Development Officer and in line with the organisation’s development strategy. S/he will have a particular focus on European funding and will represent IWPR to government agencies and targeted potential donors in the private sector across Europe. Working in collaboration with IWPR’s Chief Development Officer, Executive Director, and senior programme, development, and finance staff, s/he will develop new/and or continuing programming opportunities by building partnerships with international nongovernmental organizations, conceptualising projects and programs, and building relationships with key potential private donors in the private sector.

Primary responsibilities

Proposal Development

  • In collaboration with regional directors and programme staff, develop programming ideas to sustain and increase IWPR’s programming funded from European sources;
  • Lead and coordinate the process to generate proposals, including writing, submitting, and stewarding them as required;
  • Monitor public and private sources of information for relevant RFPs and other potential funding opportunities;

New Business Development

  • Working with Development Team, develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate and solicit European government, foundation grants, and to attract private funding;
  • Represent IWPR at external events to develop a strong network of contacts amongst potential donors;

Donor Cultivation & Relationship Management

  • In concert with Executive Director, regional directors, and programme staff in the field, coordinate and steward on-going donor relationships;
  • Working with programme staff, identify and cultivate potential funding consortium and other strategic partners;
  • As required, support the Executive Director’s major donor fundraising with UK and Europe-based prospects;
  • Assist in coordination of donor events

Senior Level Input on Department Strategy Development & Implementation

  • In concert with Chief Development Officer, devise, contribute to, implement and evaluate long-term fundraising plans to support IWPR programming and core operations;
  • Track and report on fundraising performance against plans;
  • Provide support, advice and guidance, including training for IWPR staff carrying out fundraising activities at a country, regional or local level, to ensure a consistent and coordinated fundraising approach;

Profile

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience securing government, foundation, corporate and private grants and independent gifts, including researching, soliciting and stewardship of donors;
  • Extensive knowledge of statutory grants, lotteries, corporate giving schemes and other potential sources of funding;
  • Proven track record of raising multi-million pound funds for not for profit organisations;
  • Significant experience in navigating complex government funding agencies in the UK and Europe, as well as completing government grant applications, including log-frame design and construction;
  • Experience coordinating activities across and between departments;
  • Proven experience in developing program budgets;
  • Experience representing and promoting not-for-profit organisations.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of media, conflict resolution, human rights, rule of law and international development sectors;
  • Portfolio of government, foundation, corporate and private giving contacts;
  • Developing and managing corporate and individual gift programs;
  • Organizing donor events;
  • Establishing sponsorship deals or similar;
  • Managing staff or volunteers;
  • Understanding of marketing and public relations outreach;
  • Knowledge of individual giving, tax efficient giving schemes, donor programmes, legacies, etc.

Skills

Essential:

  • Plan, launch, manage and successfully complete fundraising campaigns;
  • Communicate impeccably in English, both verbally and in writing;
  • Prioritize and achieve fundraising goals;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments to lead the development of compelling fundraising proposals, concept notes and other fundraising materials. As appropriate, work with web site/digital team to ensure high quality online content related to fundraising;
  • Adept at crafting clear and persuasive fundraising messages for a variety of needs, including donor correspondence, updates and promotional materials;
  • Prepare log-frame design and construction;
  • Set up and manage effective database management systems and procedures to administer a gifts program and oversee institutional grant management;
  • Competently use computer software programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email;
  • Effectively use internet research fundraising tools and databases;
  • Prepare and give clear and engaging presentations to donors;
  • Think creatively in designing new programming and fundraising initiatives;
  • Work outside normal office hours on occasion.

The UK Deputy Director of Development will play a key role in ensuring the success of IWPR’s fundraising efforts, with a focus on the UK and in Europe. S/he will work closely with programmes staff to develop winning public and private grant proposals; s/he will manage the proposal submission process from start to finish, taking responsibility for the excellence of all content; and s/he will cultivate and maintain vital relationships with potential donors, ensuring that they are kept up to date with all of IWPR’s achievements and impact.
