FHI 360 is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Director, Technical for the anticipated USAID Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Activity (MSNA). MSNA will provide technical support for country-led scale-up of effective, integrated, sustainable nutrition– specific and nutrition-sensitive policies, programs/interventions, and systems. The expected duration of the project is five years. Recruitment is contingent upon successful award of the project and the selection of final applicant is subject to USAID approval.

The Deputy Director, Technical is responsible for supporting program management and providing technical leadership and supervision of project activities. The Deputy Director, Technical will provide technical oversight and direction to the design and delivery of all activities and ensure adherence to timelines, submission of deliverables and production of quality products and services.

• Collaborate with Project Director to provide leadership to the program, ensure strategic program direction, and provide high quality technical assistance;
• Supervise technical team leaders to ensure high quality and comprehensive technical programming;
• Mobilize institutional and project resources, tools, best practices, innovations, technology to deliver a synergistic, evidence based program;
• Liaise with key partners and stakeholders to meet program objectives and deliver results;
• Collaborate with technical staff to ensure program activities are designed and implemented per industry best practices while being tailored to the local context;
• Work closely with the team to develop annual workplans and reports; and
• Provide leadership to ensure the development of timely, high quality and regulation compliant reporting per FHI 360 and donor guidelines.

Experience:

• At least 15 years of work in international development, with a combination of relevant research, technical, operations and management experience with donors, PVOs and international organizations. Experience in managing USAID-funded projects is preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience with country level programming that includes at least one of the following: nutrition, food security, health, agriculture, HIV/infectious disease programs.
• At least 5 years of professional experience working in low or medium income countries implementing development programs.
• Experience managing teams of multi-disciplinary technical specialists.
• Extensive experience developing, managing, tracking and reporting on activities in multiple countries and technical areas, and their associated budgets.

Skills:

• Ability to undertake problem analyses and organize diverse information in a systematic way while thinking creatively to propose approaches to improve program design, implementation and results reporting. Strong analytical ability is essential.
• Ability to work with others to translate technical materials into practical tools and approaches and to communicate these options using print, electronic and presentation services.
• Ability to work in and manage a team consisting of people with different technical backgrounds and with people with varying levels of technical training. Demonstrated managerial, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to facilitate relationships and interact smoothly and effectively with clients and colleagues.
• Superior presentation skills, both written and oral. Samples of writing will be required.
• Facility with computing environments.
• English fluency is essential and French, Portuguese or Spanish ability preferred.

Education:

• Advanced degree in nutrition, public health, agriculture or related field required.

Travel:

• Ability to travel up to 10-30% of the time.
