We are looking for someone who fits this description for our number two position at Rotary International, a 1.2 million member strong organization that connects people of every ethnicity and culture to address the world’s toughest humanitarian challenges, from peace building to providing water, sanitation and education, from polio eradication to finding paths out of poverty. As our Deputy General Secretary, you will help lead the day-to-day operations of Rotary.
You’ll need to leverage your management skills and international business experience to work with our volunteer leaders and the nearly 800 staff members at our Evanston-based headquarters and our international offices.

The Deputy General Secretary role includes oversight of multiple teams and areas of responsibility, while working closely with the General Secretary to achieve operational and strategic goals.

Job Title: Deputy General Secretary

General OverviewRotary International is seeking a new Deputy General Secretary to help lead the day-to-day management and operations of Rotary. The position requires significant leadership skill and ability. The Deputy General Secretary, working closely with the General Secretary, will help direct the operations of the RI Secretariat to achieve the goals of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. This position primarily focuses on the Secretariat’s internal activities, ensuring effective operating policies, smooth day-to-day operations and timely decision making. Specific responsibilities will include oversight of specific internal operational areas determined based upon candidate’s experience, skills, and background.
Education
- MBA or Masters Degree required
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work with Rotarian leaders and Secretariat staff
- Willingness to assume responsibilities and make decisions
- International experience
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills essential
- Prior experience in working with volunteer boards of directors
- Experience in a multi-cultural work environment
- Excellent conflict resolution skills

Specific Duties
- Take the lead on or assist in implementing policies, strategies, and programs approved by the Board and Trustees, and all priorities and goals that the President, as approved by the Board, establishes for the Secretariat.
- Represent the Secretariat at various Rotary and/or community events when appropriate and be available to travel as requested and approved by the General Secretary.
- Manage the day-to-day activities of the Office of the General Secretary including:
- Policies and procedures
- Personnel matters
- Approval of contracts, major expenditures, and legal documents
- 18th floor activities
- Scheduling conflicts
- Review and approval of press releases as required
- Oversee the direct GS budget areas
- Serve as the liaison to RI Board and the Trustee committees as appointed by the GS.
- Chair and/or participate as a member of key Secretariat committees including the Executive Management Team, the Secretariat Project Steering Committee and the RI Retirement Trust Committee.
- In the absence of the General Secretary, run the executive team meetings and other committee, staff or standing meetings for the General Secretary.
- Serve as advisor to the General Secretary.
- Work closely with the CFO to ensure that all expenditures are within the current budgets approved by the Board and Trustees.
- Serve as an advocate of employee engagement and talent management initiatives. Ensure that programs are developed and implemented and milestones are met.
- Approve compensation and benefit program changes on an enterprise level and on individual basis per established policies.
- Review decisions and advise on issues related to the international offices.
- Manage the day-to-day oversight of the Director of Audit Services.
- Maintain and monitor proper staffing levels and employee Knowledge-Skills-Abilities (KSA), in order to meet organizational needs.
- Serve as a resource to help reduce costs, improve business processes, achieve organizational goals and objectives. Ensure that information is properly developed and analyzed to support fact-based decisions.
Prior Experience
- 10+ years of executive experience in operations and administration of international organizations. Association/foundation management would be a plus.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Direct reports will include director-level positions to be determined based upon candidate’s experience, skills, and background.
Budget Responsibility
- With the General Secretary, share direct responsibility for RI and TRF operating budgets exceeding $140 million annually and assets exceeding $1 billion.
Internal Contacts
- Maintain daily contact with senior staff management and other direct reports.
External Contacts
- Maintain frequent contact with Rotarians throughout the world to represent the organization, answer inquiries, and exchange information.
- Maintain frequent contact with appropriate Rotary Committees and Rotary affiliates
