Role Overview

The Internal Audit Department provides an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve the Bank’s operations. It assists the Bank to accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to the evaluation and improvement of the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes. This includes working with executive management in their process of identification and understanding of the significant risks and related mitigating controls. The Internal Audit function has to be highly visible, unquestionable in its independent role and needs to command the necessary respect and authority in dealing with the most senior managers in the Bank and its Board of Directors.

The Deputy Head, Internal Audit reports to the Head of Internal Audit, who in turn reports directly to the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Understand the financial, commercial and strategic risks inherent within each business line and the effectiveness of the mitigating control environment that manages these risks.
  • Support the Head of Internal Audit to assist management in improving the risk management process, control environment and operational efficiency across the Bank, including the Bank’s governance, operations and information systems.
  • Assume an active role in the development and maintenance of an audit universe and risk based audit plan, as well as in the development of engagement plans setting out the scope, objectives, risks and tests for internal audit assignments.
  • Take primary responsibility for engagement supervision and preparation of draft reports, and assume an active role in the discussion of recommendations and agreed remedial actions with the appropriate level of management.
  • Assist the Head of Internal Audit in establishing an effective programme for selecting, developing and managing the Internal Audit team.
  • Deputise for the Head of Internal Audit when necessary.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree from a leading university, with a finance or business focus or other relevant post graduate degree, or professional accountancy qualification.
  • At least 10 years post-qualification experience, of which 3 years are at senior level in the internal audit function of an international financial institution or at managerial level in the financial services division of a major auditing firm.
  • Good understanding and experience of treasury activities, wholesale banking, project finance, and equity investments.
  • Excellent oral and written English a prerequisite.
  • Good level of computer literacy.
