CORPORATE BACKGROUND

UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan. Within the GPN, Governance, Rule of Law and Peacebuilding Hub, leads UNDPs work on governance, rule of law, human rights and security and conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Under the framework of the UNDP Global Programme for Strengthening the Rule of Law, Human Rights, Justice, and Security for Sustainable Peace and Development, the Rule of Law and Human Rights (RoLSHR) unit, part of the Governance and Peacebuilding Team at the UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub, focuses on supporting countries in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen the rule of law and human rights, promote access to justice for all, and advocate for inclusive justice pathways for people and the planet. This work includes enhancing inclusive, effective, and accountable justice institutions and ensuring access to justice for all as part of SDG 16, which aims to foster peaceful, just, and inclusive societies and advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As part of its regional priorities, the RoLSHR Unit is expanding its work on Digital Justice and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in justice systems, including issues related to court digitalization, technology-facilitated justice services, judicial integrity, data protection, and human rights safeguards.

The team is seeking a Digital Justice and AI in the justice system intern to support research, knowledge management and programme activities related to digital transformation and emerging technologies in the justice sector.

INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND

The intern will work with the Rule of Law, Human Rights, and Security team at the UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub, in close collaboration with UNDP Country Offices, regional partners, justice sector institutions, and other UN entities. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist, the intern will contribute to analytical, knowledge, and communication outputs that support UNDP’s regional work on digital justice and particularly support the implementation of work around AI and the Rule of Law.

DUTIES

The intern will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:

• Research and Policy Support on Digital Justice and AI (60%):
  • Conduct desk research and background analysis on digital justice, the deployment of AI in justice systems, and emerging regional and global trends;
  • Support the preparation of policy briefs, concept notes, presentations, and analytical summaries on topics such as AI-assisted adjudication, online courts, technology-facilitated access to justice, and ethical AI frameworks;
  • Assist in documenting good practices, case studies, and lessons learned from Asia-Pacific countries.
• Knowledge Management and Communications on digital justice (30%):
  • Support the development of knowledge products and communication materials (briefs, factsheets, web content, presentations) related to digital justice initiatives;
  • Assist in maintaining and updating knowledge repositories, digital platforms, and internal databases;
  • Support as needed the regional Community of Practice of the Governance, Rule of Law, and Peacebuilding Hub, particularly those related to justice innovation and digital transformation.
• Other (10%):
  • Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to provide input on strategy and content creation;
  • Support any other relevant tasks as identified by the supervisor and the RoLHR team.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

• Currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree; or
• Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or
• Have graduated no longer than 1 year from a bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent studies;

Proven thematic knowledge on the Rule of Law in Asia is considered an asset.

Field of study: Technology and Society, Digital Governance, International Development, Law, Political Science, Sociology, or other related fields in Social Sciences or Humanities.

Experience:

• Demonstrated interest or academic exposure to rule of law, justice reform, digital governance, or AI and human rights;
• Strong research, analytical, and drafting skills in English;
• Ability to synthesize complex technical or policy information into clear written outputs;
• Familiarity with digital tools, data visualization, or knowledge management platforms is an asset.

IT Skills:

• Knowledge and proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools;
• Knowledge and proficient user of various AI tools and platforms.

Language skills:

• Excellent writing and drafting skills in English as well as good communication skills required;
• Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

• UNDP will not pay interns for the internship but will provide a monthly stipend in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP internship policy (as reference, the stipend for 2025 is set at THB 8,302.50 per month; the stipend amount for 2026 is subject to change); all other expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern or the sponsoring Government or institution;
• UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
• Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
• Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
• Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan;
• Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
• Interns are expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;
• Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.
