Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

The UN Country Team (UNCT) in North Macedonia is supporting national stakeholders to accelerate digital transformation, promote innovation, and strengthen private sector contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of this effort, the UN is organizing the 2026 Private Sector Sustainability Forum and several digitalization focused initiatives with Government, academia, chambers of commerce, and businesses.

The intern will work under the supervision of the Data Officer and the Economist, and in close coordination with UNCT members and private sector partners.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Digitalization Initiatives Support
    • Coordinate with UNCT activities promoting digitalization (e-governance, digital inclusion, AI literacy, digital skills, startups, and innovation ecosystems).
    • Conduct background research on digital transformation trends in North Macedonia and the Western Balkans.
    • Assist in drafting briefs, concept notes, and meeting materials for digitalization related events.
  2. Private Sector Engagement Support
    • Prepare, outreach, and logistics for the Private Sector Sustainability Forum, including invitations, agendas, speaker coordination, and follow-up actions.
    • Assist with other activities related to private sector and sustainability.
    • Maintain and update the UN Private Sector Engagement Database.
  3. Event Organization & Coordination
    • Contribute to the organization of workshops, roundtables, consultations, and public events related to digital transformation, innovation and technology, and AI.
    • Support with event logistics, documentation, minutes, and participant coordination.
    • Event communication and/or coordination support.
  4. Data & Knowledge Management
    • Support data collection and analysis related to digitalization trends, private-sector sustainability practices, and SDG impact measurement.
    • Help prepare dashboards or summaries for UNCT meetings and reporting.
  5. Other Responsibilities
    • Perform other duties as requested by the supervisors.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Relevant fields include: technologies, engineering, economics, business administration, computer sciences, ICT, public policy, environmental studies, social sciences, engineering, communications, or related disciplines.

Evidence on research or work experience (volunteering included) related to this TOR topics is very much welcomed.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

Required skills and competencies:

  • Strong research and writing skills in English.
  • Interest in digital transformation, private sector development, and the SDGs.
  • Good organizational and communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams; MS Lists is required.
  • Experience in event organization is an asset.
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with multiple datasets, and familiarity with related software.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of Macedonian and Albanian is desirable.

Additional Information

  • The intern must have access to a computer and reliable internet connection.
  • The UN Mission will provide access to necessary software and databases.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
