JOB SUMMARY

The Director of International Affairs will be responsible for representing GPhA positions before domestic and international trade institutions and other international audiences. The Director, working in collaboration with the Government Affairs, Policy, Sciences and Regulatory Affairs teams, will help develop and advocate industry positions on international issues including U.S. and international trade policy, as well as monitor and report on all international issues impacting the generic pharmaceutical industry. The Director will work closely with all GPhA teams to coordinate international and federal messaging and outreach, including with the Communications team on press statements and media interactions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent the Association before and interact with United States Congress, Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Department of State, the White House, Health and Human Services (HHS), United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) and Department of Commerce (DoC) in coordination with the Federal Government Affairs team
  • Participate in and represent GPhA positions on international trade advisory committees (ITAC, ITAC 3) and other relevant international bodies such as World Health Organization (WHO), World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
  • Assist in developing language for intellectual property and other relevant chapters related to pharmaceuticals in trade agreements
  • Draft testimony, responses, comments and other research for submissions to international and federal bodies such as Special 301 Annual Review and Federal Register Notices
  • Monitor international trade issues relating to the pharmaceutical industry (USTR, DoC, PTO, United Nations agencies, etc.)
  • Maintain and foster relationships with foreign embassies, business and trade delegations, and foreign officials
  • Attend and assist in coordinating meetings of as well as monitor activities and report on other international generic associations such as International Generic Pharmaceutical Association (IGPA), Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA), and European Generic Medicines Association (EGA)
  • Coordinate and manage GPhA’s Member Committees – International Affairs Advisory Board (IAAB), International Affairs Working Group (IAWG) and associated Task Forces
  • Assist in managing and coordinating the efforts of GPhA’s International Affairs consultants
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Education, Skills and Experience Requirements

  • Commitment to GPhA’s mission
  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, trade or international relations, advanced degree preferred
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience
  • A solid understanding of pharmaceutical trade issues
  • Experience in health care policy with a general knowledge and understanding of key health care issues; a basic understanding of the pharmaceutical sector
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter who excels in fast-paced environment
  • Ability to travel both nationally and internationally, up to 40% of the time
