Job Description

Job Overview:

The Director of Programming and Events leads strategic development and execution of the Institute’s programming and events portfolio to sharpen and expand the Institute’s impact in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with the Executive Director to envision and realize summits with world leaders, thematic series and private dialogues, VIP visits, awards ceremonies, and related public affairs campaigns.
  • Builds and nurtures programmatic partnerships with governments, multilateral organizations, civil society and funders; and ensures program content informs and influences communities of policy and practice.
  • Supervises the program’s team shaping advocacy and engagement

Work Interactions:

Reporting to the GIWPS Executive Director and working closely with the Managing Director as well as other members of the GIWPS team, the Director of Programming and Events leads a team and supervises the Program Manager, Program Coordinator, Afghanistan Policy Associate and related Student Assistants.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience
  • 4 to 6 years of experience managing events and programs; preference for experience doing so in the international affairs field and/or with governments, diplomatic missions, or multilateral organizations
  • Substantial supervisory experience – preference for leading teams
  • Project management experience, including staffing, budgeting, performance measurement, and ensuring quality and timely deliverables.
  • Expert knowledge of elements for mounting successful events, including designing agendas, overseeing logistics (space, vendors, audience management, advance and protocol), and managing high-level speakers and participants
  • Experience with advancing inclusive approaches to crisis response, political processes, and/or advocacy for human rights, democracy and development
  • Exceptional writing, analytical and communications skills; and ability to communicate complex ideas concisely and effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship management
  • Ability to work strategically and holistically
  • Highly organized and experienced with simultaneous management of multiple projects
  • Ability to remain calm, work under pressure, and exhibit sound judgment in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail, deadlines, and consideration of others
