The Director of Sustainability Communications is responsible for developing the communications strategy to help position Cargill as a global leader in sustainability with a particular emphasis on agricultural supply chains among a wide range of key stakeholders including customers, NGOs, media, governments, employees and communities where Cargill operates. The position works with cross-functional global teams and Cargill businesses to raise Cargill’s voice and visibility on sustainability issues and build allies among a wide variety of stakeholders to help create a more sustainable global food system. He or she builds internal understanding and alignment around the company’s sustainability goals and approach and is responsible for developing and overseeing communications planning and the execution of those plans for programs that support the company’s commercial offerings in this space. The position plays a key role in helping Cargill build a strong reputation as an ethical company and a responsible global corporate citizen, coordinating closely with the company’s food security communications and other corporate responsibility teams. The position also contributes heavily to Cargill’s overall external communications efforts by leading projects and initiatives to help the company become more transparent to key stakeholders. In addition, the Director of Sustainability Communications develops and executes communications strategy for specific Cargill businesses. The Director of Sustainability Communications is part of a multi-disciplinary, global service team that includes specialists in communications, government relations, corporate responsibility, issues management, knowledge management, corporate brand management and marketing services.

Principal Accountabilities:

40% - Lead the company’s multi-year, multi-pronged effort to position itself as a leader on sustainability. Develop and execute a comprehensive sustainability communications plan and obtain support for its elements, including leadership involvement, messaging, media relations, partnerships, sponsorships, philanthropic commitments, speaking platforms, social media and measurement. Serve as company spokesperson as needed. 20% - Provide communications support to promote the company’s sustainability-related products and services. 10% - Develop and execute internal communications strategy and plans to drive alignment and support among internal stakeholders for the company’s sustainability and responsible supply chain goals.

30% - Provide leadership in strategic communications counsel and planning for specific Cargill businesses to build and enhance Cargill’s reputation and drive business results. Provide a wide range of communications and project management services to successfully execute the strategies. This includes initiating proactive communications with external stakeholders; managing communications around company crises/issues and mobilizing resources as needed during those situations; and serving as company spokesperson

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, public relations, marketing communications or related field
  • 10-plus years communications experience, preferably in large, complex organization(s)
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills - clear, concise, creative and persuasive
  • Strong business acumen
  • Demonstrated ability to build productive, long-term relationships with media, including social media
  • Experienced spokesperson
  • Demonstrated experience in internal and external communications regarding complex issues.
  • Ability to lead complex, global, multi-functional, virtual teams
  • Strong analytical and strategic planning skills. Skilled in moving from analysis to action.
  • Creative and strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to effectively position a company’s values, positions and products with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Team player with demonstrated success in providing effective team leadership
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization; interact with and have credibility with senior leadership
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple, concurrent projects within deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and succeed within a fast-paced, dynamic and challenging cross-functional, cross-cultural environment
  • Self-starter. Effective problem solver.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with global trends and issues in sustainability with a particular emphasis on agricultural supply chains
  • Experience in a global business or organization
  • Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English
  • Experience with effective use of social media
  • Knowledge and experience with change management strategies to drive business results
