FIXED-TERM PART-TIME JOB VACANCY
Russian Translations Editor
Europe & Central Asia Division
Multiple Locations Considered

ECA is seeking applicants for the position of Russian language translations editor. This position is part time at 20 hours per week. This is a fixed-term position for 18 months with the possibility of extension. The Editor will preferably be based in a European country where HRW has an office, but other locations may be considered, though the position cannot be based in Russia or Belarus. The editor reports the Associate Director responsible for work on Russia.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Support the process for English to Russian translations. and ensure a smooth workflow and respect of deadlines;
2. Vet and proof-read Russian-language translations for accuracy;
3. Liaise with freelance translators and provide translators with feedback;
4. Translate urgent short documents and texts (invitations, report blurbs, captions, letters);
5. Translate interview transcripts, from Russian to English when necessary;
6. Maintain communication on Russian translation issues among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;
7. Work with the Multimedia Division translate and vet and vet video captions and subtitles in a timely way; and
8. Carry out any other translation related tasks as required.

Duration: Fixed-term employment for 18 months.

Hours: The Translation Editor is expected to work 20 hours per week.

Qualifications:

Education: A degree in translation, journalism, social sciences, international relations, Russian studies, or relevant studies is required.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of directly related experience in translations is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Russian are required.
2. Demonstrated experience with translating and vetting material from English to Russian required and experience with translation workflows is desirable.
3. Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required; excellent editing and proofreading skills in Russian is required; ability to apply a standardized style guide is essential.
4. Strong online/Microsoft Office skills are required.
5. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple tasks are required.
6. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
7. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required.
8. Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is required.
9. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.
10. Experience in working with legal content is a preferred.
11. A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.
