Role Overview Summary

VSO, in partnership with the Uzbekistan government, is looking for experienced teaching professionals to help strengthen the teaching of the English language at the secondary school level and build the capacity of in-service teachers.

This is a unique opportunity to share your expertise and skills, collaborate with local educators, and contribute to sustainable improvements in English language teaching in schools across Uzbekistan. As a volunteer English language teacher, you will work alongside Uzbekistan teachers, delivering school curriculum lessons, professional development, and coaching workshops. You’ll support teachers and students in enhancing their English language proficiency, adopting student-centered methodologies, and implementing international best practices. Your experience will help shape the future of English language teaching in Uzbekistan.

Role purpose: The role aims to improve English language ability among secondary school students in Uzbekistan by delivering high-quality teaching of English and supporting local teachers. The volunteer will teach English to students aged 11 to 16, facilitate extracurricular language activities, and contribute to the professional development of Uzbekistan English teachers through training, coaching and mentoring. This role aims to enhance student learning outcomes and strengthen the overall quality of English language education in Uzbekistan.

Safeguarding level, Level 3: For VSO, this project falls under Safeguarding Level 3. As this volunteer position will involve direct, unsupervised access to children, each volunteer will be required to obtain the highest level of criminal background check from their home country before starting the position. VSO and its partners will have safeguarding policies in place and will ensure that they are implemented at all levels of the project.

Project Details- ESL/EFL Teacher Opportunity in Uzbekistan: The Government of Uzbekistan Ministry of Education has a commitment to improve English Language attainment for students throughout the education system. Uzbekistan has been making significant efforts to modernise its education system, with a strong emphasis on English language learning as part of its national development strategy. VSO, in partnership with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, is seeking passionate and dedicated English as a Second Language teachers (ESL) to support the enhancement of English language education in Uzbekistan public schools. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a transformative education programme while experiencing the rich cultural heritage of Uzbekistan.

Role Overview: As an ESL teacher in a government-registered public school, you will play a vital role in improving the English language skills of students aged 11–16. Through innovative and engaging teaching, you will empower students to strengthen their language proficiency and unlock future opportunities. You will also mentor and provide continuing professional development for Uzbek English language teachers through peer learning sessions and other modern approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver interactive and effective English lessons to secondary school students (50% of the time).
  • Capacity building of local English teachers through coaching and mentoring.
  • Organise and lead extra-curricular activities, including language clubs, to enhance students’ speaking and writing skills.
  • Design and deliver engaging and interactive lesson plans tailored to students’ learning needs, incorporating ICT tools and technology.
  • Provide constructive feedback to support students’ progress and confidence in using English.
  • Work closely with assistant teachers to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Facilitate workshops to build the capacity of local English language teachers.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s / Master’s degree, with CELTA, DELTA, TESOL, TEFL, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics.
  • Fluency in English (C1 level) with strong communication skills and accreditation.
  • Experience teaching ESL/EFL at the secondary or high school level is preferred.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and a collaborative approach to working with diverse teams.
  • Experience of integrating technology in teaching of English Language.
