POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT :
The Kellogg Institute for International Studies (http://kellogg.nd.edu) at the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs (http://keough.nd.edu) is a preeminent research institute for the study of democracy and human development, with particular expertise in Latin America, Africa, and the developing world. Its interdisciplinary scholarly community includes more than 100 faculty fellows at Notre Dame and draws researchers from around the world to conduct research on a wide range of topics that address critical global challenges, as well as the normative and scholarly concerns reflected in Catholic social thought. The Institute also provides educational opportunities for Notre Dame undergraduate and graduate students, as well as builds linkages to support the University’s strategic goals on internationalization.
The Executive Director functions as the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute and is responsible for all Institute operations, including management of annual operating budget of more than $5 million and direct or indirect supervision of 18 staff members. S/he reports to the Director of the Institute (a tenured faculty member), who provides intellectual leadership and determines the overall goals and strategy for the Institute. Working in close collaboration with the Director, Associate Director, Senior Strategic Advisor, and the rest of the Institute leadership team and staff, the Executive Director operationalizes the Institute’s strategy and ensures ongoing academic and programmatic excellence. In carrying out these responsibilities, s/he coordinates as necessary with the Keough School Associate Dean for Operations, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Associate Director for Finance and Administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES :
Strategic Management:
- Contributes to strategy and academic programming of the Institute in concert with the Institute’s senior leadership team. Works with Kellogg Director and leadership team to develop and implement the short- and long-term strategies, goals and action plans required to achieve Kellogg’s vision. Provides strategic and operational leadership for Kellogg faculty and staff. Serves as ex-officio member of the Kellogg faculty committee.
- Strengthens the Institute’s integration within the Keough School by facilitating collaboration with other constitutive units and supporting School-wide coordination efforts led by the Dean’s Office on business management, communications, and event planning.
Operations Management:
- Develops, plans, and directs the implementation of Institute operations, allocates resources, and creates internal procedures, structures, and processes to facilitate Institute goals and objectives, in compliance with the University’s mission, policies, and best practices. Oversees operational processes and identifies opportunities for process improvement. Resolves day-to-day operational challenges and guides operational and programmatic troubleshooting.
- Oversees, monitors, coordinates, and supports the Institute’s program areas (Visiting Fellows Program, Doctoral Student Programs; Undergraduate Programs, Research, Gifts & Grants, Communications, Events/Outreach, and Business/Finance). Supervises and works closely with the Associate Director, Program Managers, and Business Manager to ensure excellence, collaboration across teams, and achievement of overall Institute goals. Provides for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence. Promotes a culture of respect and helps build a strong sense of community among Kellogg staff. Maintains continuous lines of communication, keeping the Director informed of all critical issues. Provides effective and inspiring operational leadership to the work of the Institute by developing a broad and deep knowledge of all programs.
Institute Relations and Communications:
- Builds relationships with Kellogg Faculty Fellows and Visiting Fellows, Institute partners on and off campus, and Kellogg’s international network of faculty alumni, serving as a resource for those interested in connecting with the Institute’s work. Seeks, explores, and facilitates collaborative initiatives with University and external partners. Supports and engages faculty, students, visitors, alumni, advocates, and friends of the Institute.
- Manages Institute relations with Faculty Fellows regarding Kellogg-funded research, projects, initiatives, conferences and academic events, invited speakers, and working groups. Provides orientation for new Fellows and facilitates engagement of Kellogg faculty, ensuring they are fully aware of opportunities for involvement.
- Serves as spokesperson and advocate for the Institute, articulating its vision and strategy, promoting the Institute’s interests and culture, and communicating Kellogg’s work to a diverse spectrum of stakeholders and constituencies. In close collaboration with the Communications Manager, oversees Institute marketing and communication efforts, including communication strategy.
Financial and Human Resource Management:
- Working closely with the Institute Business Manager, oversees financial management of the Institute, the annual budget planning process, tracking and reporting of expenditures, and stewardship of Institute endowment funds, gifts and grants. Oversees project planning, budgeting, resource allocation, implementation, financial administration, and reporting for externally funded projects.
- Working with the Gifts & Grants Project Manager, oversees award administration for Institute grants to faculty and intramural grants to other University units. Serves as ex-officio member of the Institute’s faculty grants committee.
- Coordinates with the Keough School’s Academic Advancement Director, working to promote the Institute’s funding priorities with fundraisers and benefactors. In close collaboration with the Kellogg Director, Senior Strategic Advisor, and the Gifts & Grants Project Manager, assists in managing relationships with the Institute Advisory Board, cultivating a donor base and implementing development strategies.
- In close collaboration with the Institute Business Manager and the HR Consultant assigned to the Keough School, oversees human resource management for the Institute, including identification of staffing needs, recruitment and hiring, performance management, change management, team and organizational effectiveness, coaching, mentoring, and employee development. Meets regularly with Institute staff who have supervisory roles to foster effective and consistent supervisory practices. Manages, develops, and supports Kellogg staff, creating opportunities for professional/personal growth, facilitating staff interaction, as well as effectively evaluating and promoting people. Works to understand the roles of every staff member and seeks to motivate, engage, and retain existing staff by identifying and effectively utilizing their skills and talents.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field (i.e., social sciences, public policy, law, business, or another relevant discipline) required; PhD or other terminal degree (e.g., JSD , EdD) preferred
- Seven or more years of relevant experience in program administration, preferably in an academic or nonprofit setting
- Experience in and with programs that have significant international dimensions and scope
- Demonstrated evidence of effective oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students
- Ability to think strategically, seeing and connecting big picture goals and values with mission, while also handling day-to-day details
- Deep understanding of academia and research; appreciation of the Kellogg Institute’s academic knowledge-based institutional character
- Strong organizational, analytical, project management skills
- High degree of independence and initiative; action-orientation
- Experience managing budgets and financial resources
- Commitment to the mission of the Kellogg Institute, the Keough School, and the University of Notre Dame; passion for democracy and human development; appreciation of Catholic values and social thought
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in one or more foreign languages, particularly Spanish, is preferred
