Starting your career in Wellington, you could go on to be based in one of 50 overseas posts promoting New Zealand’s international interests in the political, economic, trade or security areas. You’ll enjoy unrivalled scope during your diplomatic career with the Ministry.

You will be a graduate with work experience in a relevant field in the public or private sector, a recent graduate or be in your final year of study. You will have an excellent academic record, and hold (or be completing) an honours degree, a post-graduate degree in any discipline, or a conjoint degree that includes economics or law. Analytical, resourceful, resilient and adaptable with great communication skills, you will enjoy access to our skills and policy-based training and gain expertise in New Zealand’s foreign policy.

You must be a New Zealand citizen and be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate Government security clearance.

The Selection Process

Initial screening interviews for short listed candidates will be held in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland (or by telephone for those overseas) from early to mid-April.

Those candidates selected to progress to the next stage will be invited to our assessment centre in Wellington which runs from Tuesday 15 May to Wednesday 23 May. Candidates selected for this final selection stage must be able to attend, in person, in Wellington, on one of these days.
