Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is in the Enterprise Solutions Service, Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT/ESS), hosted by UNESCAP in Bangkok, Thailand. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in OICT/ESS.

The intern will contribute to the development of a full-stack system designed to receive and visualize fuel transactions from Android-based scanners already deployed in peacekeeping missions. This is a data-driven, real-world operational project involving the following tasks:

• Assist in the development of a backend API using Spring Boot to securely receive and process fuel transaction data.

• Contribute to the design of a SQL database schema optimized for operational use and reporting.

• Implement a web-based front-end using React to enable authorized users to consult and explore fuel transaction records.

• Write documentation and participate in Agile development cycles (sprints, code reviews, testing).

• Collaborate with stakeholders from peacekeeping missions and other OICT teams.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in full-stack software development in a mission-critical environment.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Familiarity with Java, Spring Boot, React, SQL databases, and RESTful APIs is desirable. Shall be able to work independently;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
  • A demonstrated interest in full-stack development and real-time data systems is an asset.
