Gist Research are recruiting a Geospacial Information Systems (GIS) Consultant to support on-going research projects. We are looking for someone who loves geospatial data management, analysis and visualisation. You will lead on the design and maintenance of geospatial databases and on the development of workflows and data pipeline solutions. This is an exciting opportunity for someone that is diligent and methodical, and detail focussed with a hard work ethic, the ability to deliver quality under pressure and react to quickly changing requirements. The role will initally be for 1-3 days per week, this may flex up and down, we we are looking for a flexile resource that is happy to work remotely within +/- 3 hours of GMT time zone.

WHAT IS THE JOB?
The GIS Consultant will develop workflows for data storage, processing, transfer and visualisation, including automation of critical geoprocessing workflows. You will develop new models, data services, and predictive analytics for a diverse range of projects and be capable of manipulating existing databases and data sets utilising geoprocessing tools.
You will maintain and update GIS maps and data and create interactive and static cartography using common GIS systems (specifically ArcGIS and/or QGIS). You will work in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment alongside a distributed team of talented and dedicated professionals across a variety of fields including GIS, imagery and remote sensing analysis, socio-political and conflict analysis, scripting and workflow development. This position requires experience developing and designing new projects and solutions and coordinating projects between teams.
Responsibilities include:
· Managing and developing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types
· Developing satellite imagery analysis and remote sensing capabilities
· Producing maps showing the spatial distribution of various kinds of data, including instances of violence, access to key services, access to humanitarian aid and civilian freedom of movement
· Producing regular cuts of cleaned data to client specifications
· Data entry into mapping software
· Performing data collation and cleaning to convert data into its desired form
· Analysing spatial data using mapping and/or data analysis software
· Creating “shapefiles” to merge topographical data with external data
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The role requires specific hard and soft skills to effectively lead on these functions for the business. The below captures the most important ones as we see them:
Essential criteria
· Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject or a related field with a specialty in GIS
· 5+ years’ experience as a GIS analyst
· Experience with data evaluation, integration, cleansing, data processing, data warehousing, and management, etc.
· Experience with GIS data management, analysis, and visualisation
· Thorough understanding of geospatial data management and analysis, including analysis of remote sensing data
· Strong skills with a variety of GIS software
· Experience working with both vector and raster data, digital terrain models, weather data, imagery/remote sensing, and standard GIS data formats such as shapefiles, geodatabases, feature classes, geotiffs etc.
· Experience working with different databases and data types (PostGres, SQLServer, Mongo, etc.)
· Experience building visualisations, maps, dynamic charts, dashboards, etc.
· Experience working with diverse types and formats of datasets
· Ability to design methodologies and overcome challenges
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products
· Self-starter who can demonstrate and ability to implement and own processes
· You demonstrate initiative in solving problems to achieve results
· You have knowledge of data governance and data quality management concepts
· You can sustain effective working relationships both virtually and physically
· You are comfortable in dealing with stakeholders across the globe
· You have solid written and verbal communication skills in English
Desirable criteria
· Proficiency in another language is a bonus
· Experience with remotely sensed optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, aerial, and UaS imagery is beneficial
· Remote sensing expertise to develop, apply and automate image processing and exploitation routines, and AI/ML/DL algorithms is beneficial
