Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Background Governance, policy, and advocacy are crucial components of UNEP’s Climate Security initiatives in Somalia.
  • UNEP’s focus is on fostering robust governance frameworks, providing support for developing environmental policies, and building capacity for climate security solutions.
  • The Governance, Policy, and Advocacy Intern will support UNEP’s work in engaging with stakeholders, contributing to shaping policies, and strengthening governance mechanisms related to climate security in Somalia.
  • Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Climate Security Advisor, the intern will work on:
    • Policy and Governance Support:
      • Assist in research and advocacy in collaboration with Somali government partners.
      • Contribute to learning and capacity-building efforts on climate security.
      • Engage in policy-related research and advocacy tasks.
    • Stakeholder Engagement:
      • Support coordination and meetings with stakeholders, including government and regional entities.
      • Attend JOSP governance meetings and provide relevant inputs.
    • Event and Meeting Participation:
      • Provide administrative and substantive support to meetings, including taking minutes.
      • Attend relevant events in Nairobi and support event organization as needed.
    • Advocacy and Outreach:
      • Draft content for advocacy materials and contribute to public outreach activities.
      • Support UNEP’s climate security campaigns and policy dialogues.
    • General Support:
      • Assist with logistics, coordination, and preparation of background documents for the team.
      • Support other tasks as necessary to fulfill the objectives of the Climate Security program.
Qualifications/special skills
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program in politics, international relations, or related fields.
Languages
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written). Knowledge of another UN language is an asset. Competencies
  • Strong understanding of governance, policy analysis, and advocacy strategies.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to a multicultural environment.
  • Proficiency in research and report writing.
Intern Specific text
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
