Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Grouting Specialist required for a large dam site in Kenya. Our client has asked SMEC to provide a suitably qualified and experienced specialist to give support/guidance to the Contractor’s staff to improve his operations.
- Responsibilities will be to give advice and guidance to the contractor on how to improve his grouting operations, including ground treatment in mixed biotite and granitic gneiss terrain for waterproofing a major 1500m long CFRD dam, a 250m long concrete spillway weir as well as embankment saddle dams; as well as grouting for underground works (curtain, consolidation and contact grouting) for approx. 1800m of large diameter tunnels and shafts that have substantively been excavated and lined.
- Improvement of Contractor’s QA/QC systems and protocols
General Requirements
- Adhere to corporate values, policies and procedures
- Assist with the management, delivery and administration of the project
- Analysis and design of technical solutions
- Preparation of technical and progress reports including assessment of resource availability and material balance for project construction
KEY CHALLENGES
- Improving quality assurance and quality control to achieve earliest practical contract completion to specification.
- Curtain, contact and consolidation grouting at the CFRD plinth and in underground elements of the Works.
- Working with an inexperienced and under -resourced Chinese Contractor
- Working in a relatively remote location with ad hoc specialist technical support
- Co-operation with other disciplines/groups within the project team

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Basic requirements are as follows:
- Substantive experience of dam and underground works grouting and associated QA/QC arrangements is preferred.
- Knowledge of curtain, contact and consolidation grouting operations, equipment and methods
- Technical qualification is preferred with at least 20 years’ practical relevant experience
- Willingness to work with a Chinese contractor in an area of Kenya approx. 2.5 hours drive from Nairobi.
- Record keeping
- Valid Driver’s Licence (light motor vehicle)
- Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
- Ability to make technical decisions which are outcome driven
