Main purpose of job:
The purpose of this job is to be the lead for strategic communications and marketing for the UK Department for International Trade (DIT) in Australia and New Zealand to promote the UK as a first-class destination for inward investment, as an export superpower as well as enhancing the reputation of DIT as a source of expertise, influence, impact and reach.
Roles and responsibilities:
This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a confident, motivated and experienced professional. You will have a strong marketing and communications background and be responsible for managing activity across Australia and New Zealand, supported by a small team.
Working alongside our trade and investment promotion teams, other UK government colleagues in ANZ and other colleagues in the Asia Pacific, you will develop a marketing and communication strategy that positions the UK as an ideal trade partner; generates demand for UK products and services and encourages Australian and New Zealand companies to invest in the UK; and help shape the UK government’s economic response in ANZ to challenges flowing from the Covid-19 crisis.
This is both a strategic and hands on role where you will utilise a range of channels including digital, social, direct marketing, experiential, media and PR. You will require high level project management skills as well as the ability to work well with external stakeholders.
You will be used to working in a fast-paced environment, have strong team management and mentoring skills and know-how to bring out the best in your team and drive marketing and communications excellence across our trade and investment teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and execute an insight-driven marketing and communications strategy and plan including evaluation, both for industry and wider campaigns;
- Set direction for and manage a small communications, marketing and events team including Communications Officer and Marketing & Events Manager, ensuring quality and timely output.
- Establish good media relationships, identify publicity opportunities and pitch stories to deliver key DIT messages and support campaigns led by trade and investment teams
- Lead locally on trade and relevant policy communications and media for British Consuls General, in Sydney Melbourne and Brisbane, visiting UK Ministers and VIPs and; provide wider network communications support as required, including media handling for high profile consular cases and other crises.
- Establish strong, productive and collaborative working relationships with internal trade and investment teams
- Produce compelling strategic communications and impactful events, including digital or virtual events, that demonstrate value for money
- Work collaboratively with the Foreign and Comonwealth Office’s communication team at the British High Commission (and Visit Britain and British Council) to ensure joined up strategic communications on cross-HMG campaigns, including GREAT Britain campaigns.
- Write/oversee writing of media lines, core scripts, briefs, speaking notes, articles, case studies, copy for digital and print and project bids.
- Oversee DIT’s social media channels in Australia and New Zealand, providing direction on strategy and content.
- Ensure integration and leverage of ‘GREAT’ Britain brand across all activity in compliance with brand guidelines and champion the GREAT campaign locally, identifying opportunities to maximise exposure
- Be an active member of the UK in Australia’s Soft Power Committee and contribute to projects as required
- Establish strong working relationships with Marcomms colleagues in the Asia Pacific hub and London HQ - collaborating, sharing best practice, joining up on regional campaigns and reporting as required.
- Celebrate and profile DIT Australia and New Zealand’s successes through internal communication channels locally and in London
- Use audience and business insights to inform planning; provide counsel/input into globally led campaigns to ensure they meet needs of the local market and resonate with local audiences.
- Demonstrate a commitment to self-development and developing others, building long-term staff capability and competency in and beyond own team;
- Commission, manage and negotiate with third party suppliers in line with procurement guidelines
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Essential on arrival:
- Minimum bachelor degree level, ideally in marketing and/or communications;
- Ability to manage a number of different projects and deliver them all on time
- At least 5 years of work experience in strategic marketing/communications;
- Budget management skills and experience.
- Proven track record in development and delivery of strategic communication and marketing across a range of budgets and channels;
- Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to influence senior leaders and stakeholders, as well as work collaboratively across peer networks;
- Engaging and resilient leader, able to empower colleagues and build capability;
- Proven stakeholder management skills
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Understanding of the political, business and investment climate in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
