This is an exciting opportunity for a Highway Engineer (Pavement) to join a leading infrastructure consultancy and contribute to the growth and development of a business with a reputation for technical excellence and strong client relationships. The total service of this role shall be up to a two year contractual opportunity based at Yangon, Myanmar.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead the project and provide designs and construction advice for the upgrade of BOT Highways. This will involve review of the current design drawings, specifications, site visits construction methods for improvement that can be undertaken to extending lifespan and resilience of all aspects of the road and in particular, the pavement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Engineer will provide technical expertise and support for all matters relating to the road upgrading and pavement design and construction supervision services.
  • The Engineer shall also be familiar with checking Pavement & Materials as follows:

- General subgrade construction and material specification
- Asphalt paving, construction depth and material specification
- Pavement design review and update
- Borrow pits and source materials

  • The Engineer shall also manage, lead and coordinate and lead the Project Team on project related activities.
  • Assist the SMEC Project Manager with the Weekly and Monthly Progress Reports and lead the delivery of Project Outputs in Accordance with Contract delivery schedule.
  • Training, Mentoring and Guidance to local Staff.
  • Coordination of the Project team to ensure that the detail design and specifications are correctly and consistently implemented on all the road sections included in the project.
  • Provide leadership and to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with all those involved in the project, particularly with the Client and SMEC Project Director.
  • To meet at regular intervals with the SMEC Project Director and to keep them advised on the status of cost versus budget, the progress of the work and other key issues.
  • The potion may require provisions of assistance to SMEC Myanmar with other projects or bids/proposals and business development dependent on Project commitments.

Key Qualifications:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in design and construction of highways and pavement works in tropical countries.
  • Experience from South East Asia is preferred.
  • Particular experience is required in the design of the application of asphaltic concrete pavements.
  • Experience in business development, preparation of bids, EOI and proposals for transport projects will be highly regarded
  • Relevant experience with an engineering consulting company
  • Project management experience.
