Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Human Resources (OHR) is seeking passionate young interns who are innovative doers and thinkers, interested in making a difference for a better world. OHR promotes a dynamic, adaptable, and mobile workforce with the highest standards of competence and integrity, ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of the Organization’s mandates.

These internships are within the Global Strategy and Policy Division (GSPD) of OHR, part of the Department of Management Strategy, Policy, and Compliance (DMSPC).

About GSPD:

  • Serves as the central authority on all human resources management matters.
  • Ensures the Organization has the strategies, policies, frameworks, and tools necessary to attract, develop, and retain a talented and diverse global workforce.
  • Fosters a culture of engagement, leadership, and results by providing strategic and thought leadership, policy guidance, and innovative solutions for managing talent end-to-end.
  • Covers areas such as strategic workforce planning, talent acquisition, staff development, performance management, mobility, and duty of care for all Secretariat staff.

The internship is for a minimum of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension up to six (6) months, depending on departmental needs. It is unpaid and may be full-time or part-time. Interns work up to 35 hours per week under the supervision of a staff member.

Depending on the intern’s background, interests, and the ongoing activities of GSPD, interns will gain hands-on experience in two or more of the following areas:

A. Administrative and Technical Skills
  • Assist in designing, updating, and maintaining internal records, databases, and SharePoint files, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Use or apply a variety of Office 365 apps, Power BI, or other software to prepare team presentations, reports, and communications.
B. Strategic Communication, Translation, and Adaptation
  • Contribute to communication, knowledge-sharing, and outreach activities, including drafting written materials and maintaining web or social media content.
  • Assist in the planning and dissemination of communication products.
  • Contribute to translations or adaptations into or from languages you are proficient in (e.g., English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish).
  • Provide feedback on how to adapt communications to specific purposes or audiences.
  • Monitor and contribute to online communities to maintain or enhance engagement.
C. Graphic Design and Video Development
  • Design or edit visuals that align with United Nations branding guidelines.
  • Learn or further develop skills in using software to design, develop, and/or edit visual products such as infographics, presentations, interactive visuals, and videos.
D. Research and Data Analysis
  • Conduct research on HR-related policies, best practices, and data trends; summarize key findings.
  • Collect and analyze data for internal reports, budgetary submissions, and oversight reviews.
  • Develop visual solutions and reports based on multiple data sources to support decision-making.
E. Workforce Engagement, Talent Management, and Organizational Learning
  • Help design, develop, and implement learning and development initiatives and training materials on topics such as leadership, inclusion, coaching, career transition, and performance management.
  • Help plan, coordinate, and support briefings, learning sessions, and knowledge-sharing events.
  • Participate in outreach efforts to engage talent communities and promote job opportunities and HR initiatives.
  • Support the launch and learning experience design of a new enterprise-level Learning Management System for the UN Secretariat.
  • Support implementation of UN strategies and policies that enhance staff well-being and engagement, including the UN Mental Health Strategy, Disability Inclusion, workplace harmony, multilingualism, and more.
F. Meetings and Documentation
  • Summarize discussions and draft reports based on meetings, conferences, and working groups.
  • Provide support in document editing, tracking changes, and ensuring consistency in technical documents.
  • Monitor follow-up actions and contribute to key HR initiatives.
G. Other Opportunities
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Work with other OHR teams to support cross-functional HR initiatives.
  • Propose innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Help organize social or team-building opportunities to strengthen engagement.
Qualifications / Special Skills

Eligibility:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Additional requirements:

  • No professional work experience is required.
  • The field of study must be closely related to the internship area.
  • Applicants must be able to provide proof of enrolment or completion and, if selected, an official certificate.
  • Candidates are required to cover their own costs, including travel, visa, accommodation, health insurance, and other living expenses.
Languages
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may need to obtain appropriate visa and work authorization.
  • Successful candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
