Context

HI’s International Programs Department (IPD) consists of seven geographic departments, four technical departments, one emergency department, and one cross-functional unit. Within this framework, the Emergency Monitoring and Preparedness Unit (EMPU) was established to:

  • Monitor humanitarian risks globally
  • Prepare HI field programs for potential crises (natural disasters, epidemics, conflict)
  • Support low- and medium-intensity emergency responses in HI’s development contexts
Internship Objectives & Responsibilities

As part of the Emergency team, the intern will support humanitarian crisis analysis, data synthesis, and internal coordination. You will be assigned the following tasks:

1. Support Humanitarian Crisis Analysis
  • Conduct in-depth context analysis on crises in countries such as Sudan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, South Sudan, Haiti, DRC, and Venezuela
  • Produce a daily press review covering humanitarian and security developments
  • Draft thematic publications on areas such as political dynamics, food security, or sectoral challenges
  • Present key findings regularly to support coordination and decision-making
2. Monitor Emerging Crises
  • Support the internal alert process during rapid-onset emergencies
  • Conduct crisis impact assessments and humanitarian needs analysis
  • Strengthen context monitoring by collaborating with HQ and field teams
  • Draft and disseminate situation summaries outlining humanitarian needs and responses
  • Provide frequent updates to the emergency team on evolving contexts
3. Support Data Collection and Analysis
  • Collect and organize data from priority humanitarian contexts
  • Categorize, verify, and maintain data in internal databases
  • Assist in creating infographics, maps, and visual reports to support analysis
  • Contribute to improving the unit’s monitoring methodology and technical processes
4. Support Internal Operations
  • Draft and format internal communication materials (e.g., intranet articles, reports, presentations)
  • Translate documents as needed
  • Take minutes during meetings and workshops to support documentation and follow-up
  • Assist with administrative tasks for smooth daily operations of the team
Candidate Profile Required Qualifications
  • Academic background in political science, international relations, humanitarian action, risk/disaster management, or similar fields
  • Knowledge of current geopolitical and humanitarian issues
  • Strong writing, analytical, and synthesis skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent command of English and French (spoken and written); Spanish is required for Latin America-related tasks
Desirable Skills
  • Experience or coursework in humanitarian analysis, international aid, or emergency response
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., infographics, dashboards)
  • Familiarity with mapping tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize
  • Critical thinking and independence
