The Alliance for Building Better Medicine, including partner USP, aims to accelerate pharmaceutical industry growth and sustainability as part of an NSF Regional Innovations Engines Development Award. As part of the Alliance, USP is leading the effort to develop an IP framework for the Alliance. To successfully implement this activity, USP is seeking an Intellectual Property Consultant to work with Alliance members to develop a draft IP framework and recommendations to put forward to the Alliance board.
This consultancy has a period of performance from October 2025- June 2026.
Location of Assignment: Remote, but Richmond, VA preferred.
Scope of Work:
· Conduct desk research and meetings with Alliance members to understand key IP considerations to inform development of an Alliance-wide IP framework
· Lead in-person meetings with Alliance members as part of the drafting process to include insights, best practices, concerns, etc.
o Two meetings will be used to gain input on development of framework
o Two meetings will be used to validate and finalize draft framework
· Deliver and participate in a final draft IP framework and recommendation to both Activation Capital and the ABBM board members to take
forward as applicable
Deliverables:
· Summary of Desk Research in report format
· Draft Intellectual Property framework and recommendations
Qualifications:
· At least 10 years’ experience in intellectual property, including copyright, trademark, trade secrets and patent rights, including a deep understanding of applicable Federal and Virginia law.
· Expertise in intellectual property issues pertaining to public-private partnerships, and to the issues of particular concern to the various types of organizations in the Alliance, i.e., public bodies, commercial firms, not-for-profit organizations.
· Experience in shared IP frameworks used by consortia.
· Familiarity with various contractual instruments used to protect the rights of parties sharing intellectual property, including nondisclosure agreements and data use agreements.
· Experience in gathering and synthesizing stakeholder input to develop a cohesive strategy and framework that would work for all members.
· Experience with drafting frameworks or similar documents that reflect stakeholder input.
· Ability to make recommendations to a board, receive feedback and make revisions.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
· Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet.
