Interim Director of Human Resources
The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is seeking an Interim Director of Human Resources (HR) to oversee all HR functions for an international development non-profit organization with over 1200 employees worldwide, during the two- to three-month recruitment of a new Director of HR. The Interim Director will manage a team of nine HR staff; conduct a needs assessment for the team; and take part in the executive search for a long-term successor. The position requires an HR leader with a broad understanding of human resources management to oversee the team’s leadership transition and hand off responsibility to a new director. The Interim Director will report to the Vice President of Administration and will partner with NDI’s Executive Team and Directors to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job, as outlined below. This position is based in Washington, DC.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Skills and Abilities:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, related field or business administration, advanced degree preferred. Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on one-for-one basis;
PHR/SPHR/GPHR strongly preferred;
Twenty (20) years of experience in Human Resources and at least five (5) years at director level managing a staff size of ten (10) or more and direct supervision of minimum of three (3) staff
International, multi-site HR experience required;
Leadership, management, and communications skills with proven ability to provide guidance and support to both the HR team and as a business partner to NDI leadership;
Ability to develop relationships at all levels within the organization, across program departments, with partners, vendors, and other stakeholders;
Ability to quickly gain trust and respect from a highly intellectual organization;
Current knowledge of human capital issues with ability to educate the Institute on new trends, best practices, laws, and policies affecting HR policies and procedures;
Demonstrated expertise in three or more HR areas:
Development and implementation of effective HR strategies for accomplishing organizational goals and responsibilities;
Organizational Development
Staff management, leadership, and team-building;
Employment law compliance and related issues;
Employee relations;
Compensation and Benefits planning and design,;
Human Capital Management Systems
Management of performance evaluation processes and systems;
Staff development and training
Management of Recruiting and Retention functions;
Working knowledge of federally-funded grant rules a plus;
