Job Description

Chinese Translation Internship – United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)

Work Location

  • In-person in Vienna

Expected Duration

  • 2–6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The internship is UNPAID, and interns work five days per week (full-time – 40 hours).
  • The intern will operate as part of the Chinese Translation Section (CTS) of CMS at UNOV, under the general guidance of the Chief of Section.
  • The intern will learn about and familiarize themselves with subject matters handled by CTS in its daily translation work, guided by experienced translators and revisers.
  • Develop translation and desktop publishing skills through practice and participation in document translation/desktop publishing tasks.
  • Carry out the following activities:
    • Practice and upgrade general capabilities and specific skills in the use of various translation apps and terminology databases, especially eLuna, including all its major features and functionalities.
    • Learn and perform tasks related to the work of the Chinese Desktop Publishing Team (CDPT) under the supervision of the Team’s Supervisor and as instructed by the Chief of Section.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • For this specific position, studying for a Master’s degree in Translation in a Chinese language university or translation school is an advantage. (Official written proof from the university supporting one of the above options must be attached to the Inspira application.)
  • Must be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Chinese (main language of education and translation target language) and English (source language of translation diploma) is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish).

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • All costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions.
