The WFP Kenya Country Office (KCO) implements an Internship Programme designed to deepen understanding of the United Nations by providing practical, hands-on experience within the World Food Programme. The programme offers graduate students an opportunity to gain professional exposure in their respective fields of study and specialization, both within programme areas and across various offices in the country.

The Country Office is now seeking to select Interns for Cohort 3, 2026, for an eight-month programme with opportunities in both Field Offices and the Nairobi Office. For Field Office placements, priority will be given to candidates from the surrounding local communities to enhance impact.

Applicants must be Kenyan nationals, recent graduates, and residents of Kenya. Candidates placed in field locations will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation near the respective duty stations. Proficiency in the local language is required for this role to ensure effective communication with stakeholders.

Intern - Communications , Nairobi

The Intern will support the WFP Kenya Communications Unit to deliver people-centred, timely and strategic internal and external communications that amplify WFP’s operational impact, donor accountability, and public visibility.

Key Responsibilities

Content Development & Storytelling

  • Support drafting and editing of human-interest stories, social media copy, and internal products(e.g. Weekly Highlights).
  • Assist in packaging operational updates into accessible, audience-appropriate communication products.
  • Support basic photo and video editing for digital platforms.

Digital & Media Support

  • Support social media monitoring, analytics tracking, and content scheduling.
  • Assist in compiling media coverage, donor visibility trackers, and communication reports.
  • Support preparation of media briefing materials and background notes as required.

Internal Communications & Knowledge Management

  • Support coordination of inputs from units and Field Offices for internal communications.
  • Assist with archiving, organising, and maintaining communications assets (photos, videos, key messages).

Cross-Unit Support

  • Provide communications support to selected programmes and Field Offices, ensuring consistency of messaging, tone and branding.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Gain hands-on experience in humanitarian and development communications within a UN agency.
  • Build practical skills in strategic storytelling, digital communications, and media support.
  • Understand how communications supports operations, donor relations, and accountability.
  • Develop professional competencies in coordination, deadline management, and teamwork.

Qualifications Required:

  • Education: A recent graduate (within the last 6 months) with a Bachelors in Communications, Journalism or related field
  • Language: Fluency in oral and written English.
  • Computer literacy: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).

Duration of Internship: 8 months
