Expected duration: 3 - 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities.

The internship in the Energy Unit, Natural Resources Division (Santiago, Chile), will last 3 to 6 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “as-needed” basis.

Under the supervision or overall guidance of Economics Officer, the intern will support the team in the analysis of data and information on natural resources to contribute to the Unit’s analytical and policy work.

Tasks might include:

  • Assisting in research on natural resources issues and topics.
  • Searching, collecting and organizing data and information on natural resources issues and topics from various sources.
  • Reviewing documents (such as articles, papers, etc.) on natural resources issues and topics and preparing abstracts, summaries and other inputs of them.
  • Proofreading documents.
  • Editing texts for accuracy, grammar, punctuation and style, and for adherence to established editorial rules and standards.
  • Providing administrative support in meetings (conferences, workshops, webinars, etc.).
  • Preparing a variety of inputs for documents (reports, papers, concept notes, etc.) and presentations, which may include abstracts, notes, charts, diagrams, tables among other materials.
  • Providing support in writing news and updating Unit’s web content.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook and MS Teams. Ability to draft documents, prepare presentations and manage databases is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
