Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) serves as the UN headquarters in Africa, with the Director-General of UNON acting as the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON provides administrative, security, conference, and information services to support the programme implementation of:
- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
- The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat)
- The Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally
- Other UN offices in Kenya
This internship is based in the Division of Administrative Services (DAS), Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS), Infrastructure Management (IMS) at UNON. The intern will report to the supervisor of the Infrastructure Management team.
Responsibilities
The selected intern will contribute to the following areas:
- Assisting in the daily operation of the UNON IMS Server and Backup.
- Supporting IT infrastructure management, including server maintenance and cloud resources.
- Monitoring, reporting, and optimizing data center performance for efficiency and compliance.
- Performing user account management, structured cabling installation, and network maintenance.
- Collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data to generate actionable insights.
- Conducting AI and machine learning research while staying updated on industry trends.
- Assisting in the research, deployment, and optimization of Microsoft Copilot for IT automation and AI-driven workflows.
- Documenting processes, tracking configurations, and presenting weekly progress reports.
Qualifications and Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following academic requirements:
- (a) Be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in information and communication technology or a related field.
- (b) Be in the final academic year of a degree program in information and communication technology or a related field.
- (c) If studying in a country where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least three years of full-time university studies toward a degree in information and communication technology or a related field.
Preferred fields of study:
Candidates should be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree or have completed a degree in:
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Business Technology Management
- Data Science
- Electrical & Computer Engineering
- Any related field with a focus on data analytics, IT infrastructure, or business technology
Work Experience:
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
- However, a field of study closely related to the internship is required.
- Familiarity with IT infrastructure, cloud computing, or network optimization is beneficial, particularly in projects related to IT support, server migration, or cloud technologies.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship.
- Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
Internship-Specific Terms
- Internships at the UN are unpaid.
- Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
- Non-citizens or non-permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may require a visa and work authorization.
