Duties and Responsibilities
The Social Development Division/ Sustainable Socioeconomic Transformation Section internship is for 2-4 months with an opportunity for extension up to 6 months, pending on the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation Section.
The Social Development Division consists of three sections, namely:
These cover thematic areas of inequality and social protection, population dynamics, ageing, migration, gender equality, disability and youth.
SETS covers the thematic areas of poverty reduction, financing for social development, inequality and social protection and has a team made up of professional and general service staff with experience in diverse socioeconomic fields. Communication is valued and team members are encouraged to think analytically and also find creative ways to address problems.
SDD will also convene its ninth Committee on Social Development, 11-13 November 2026, which will convene governments from the region to discuss issues related to poverty reduction, inequality and social protection.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. Please explain how you meet this criterion using examples.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
